My son likes this book, but it is kind of basic. Even though he is just 4 1/2, he wants more detail. He is very into the solar system and wants all the info. He was disappointed that the dwarf planets were not included.

I bought about 8 books for my daughter for Christmas. She immediately gravitated to this one! She is 5, and read it to my 3 year old who walked up to me and told me that the moon is made out of rocks. Worked for our family!

This book got my 4 year old hooked on planets. We read it at night and since he's got a shorter attention span, we stick to the main parts of the book but as he gets older I imagine he'll enjoy some of the more detailed information in the insets also. He can now identify all the planets and recently asked for his room to be redone with planets and stars. It's a hit.

About the Author
Anne Houtman is Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering at California State University Bakersfield. Anne has over 20 years of experience teaching non-majors biology at a variety of private and public institutions, which gives her a broad perspective and a wide view of the education landscape. She is strongly committed to evidence-based, experiential education and has been an active participant in the national dialogue on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education for almost 20 years. Anne's research interests are in the ecology and evolution of hummingbirds. She grew up in Hawaii, received her doctorate in zoology from the University of Oxford, and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto.

Megan Scudellari is an award-winning freelance science writer and journalist based in Boston, Massachusetts, specializing in the life and environmental sciences. She has contributed to Newsweek, Scientific American, Discover, Nature, and Technology Review, among others. For five years she worked as a correspondent and later as a contributing editor for The Scientist magazine. In 2013, she was awarded the prestigious Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award in recognition of outstanding reporting and writing in science. She has also received accolades for investigative reporting on traumatic brain injury and a feature story on prosthetics that mimic a sense of touch. Megan received an MS from the Graduate Program in Science Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a BA from Boston College, and she has worked as an educator at the Museum of Science, Boston.

Cindy Malone began her scientific career wearing hip-waders in a swamp behind her home in Illinois. She earned her BS in Biology at Illinois State University and her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at UCLA. She continued her post-doctoral work at UCLA in Molecular Genetics. Dr. Malone is currently a distinguished educator and an Associate Professor at California State University, Northridge, where she is the Director of the CSUN-UCLA Bridges to Stem Cell Research Program funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Malone’s research is aimed at training undergraduates and masters degree candidates to understand how genes are regulated through genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that alter gene expression. She has been teaching non-majors biology for over 15 years and has won curriculum enhancement and teaching awards at CSUN.

Anu Singh-Cundy received her PhD from Cornell University and did post-doctoral research in cell and molecular biology at Penn State. She is an associate professor at Western Washington University, where she teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, including organismal biology, cell biology, plant developmental biology, and plant biochemistry. She has taught introductory biology to non-majors for over 15 years and is recognized for pedagogical innovations that communicate biological principles in a manner that engages the non-science student and emphasizes the relevance of biology in everyday life. Her research focuses on cell-cell communication in plants, especially self-incompatibility and other pollen-pistil interactions. She has published over a dozen research articles and has received several awards and grants, including a grant from the National Science Foundation.

This book added nothing new to my knowledge of NLP. A majority of the book was spent stating and re-stating why it was controversial and the topic itself was barely covered. It was badly written and full of grammatical and typographical errors.

Obvious, overly-simplified, condescending trafe

Book added nothing to my knowledge of NLP and alas confirmed my long-held suspicion that its practitioners think the rest of us are beyond stupid, which I guess would be the case if we were dumb enough to fall for this blindingly obvious, overly-simplified view of what can only by a real stretch be called negotiation. Can any of you say "Law School" - this is far below the level of Negotiation 101 - even below Improv in Theatre Studies. Do not waste your time.

Some Good Tips But Overall a Rip-Off

Rip-off. It has some good tips for rapport building with others, but the self mastery tips are just common sense. It also talks about some interesting and powerful dark NLP techniques in the intro WHICH IT DOES NOT GO INTO LATER ON--very disappointing!!!!
Based on my other readings on NLP, this author does in fact demonstrate knowledge in NLP but he doesn't tell you how to use them very well. He just gives you a very elementary overview of the concepts so it's pretty much pointless.
Not worth the money. Don't buy it.

This book examines current issues of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in civil infrastructure.  The contents of this book are divided into two parts.  The first part engages topics related to durability and service life of FRP composites and how they contribute to sustainability.  The second part highlights implementation and applications of the FRP composites with an emphasis on bridge structures.  An introductory chapter provides an overview of FRP composites and its role in a sustainable built environment highlighting the issues of durability and service life followed by a current review of sustainability in infrastructure design.

About the Author

Ravi K. Jain is Dean, School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of the Pacific. Prior to this appointment, he has held research, faculty, and administrative positions at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Cincinnati. He received degrees in civil engineering (BS, MSCE) from California State University. He holds a Ph.D. from Texas Tech University and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. He has directed major research programs for the US department of Defense and has served as chairman of the Environmental Engineering Research Council, ASCE. He is a member of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, a fellow of ASCE, and a fellow of AAAS. He has been a Littauer fellow at Harvard University and a fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge University. He has published 14 books, over 150 scholarly papers and technical reports, and has received many awards and honors including the US Army’s highest research award and was a recipient of the NSPE Founders Gold Medal and named Federal Engineering of the Year for 1989.

Luke Lee, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of the Pacific, Stockton, California.  He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, his M.S. in Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego. He is well-known for his work on infrastructure renewal using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, durability characterization of FRP composites, service life estimation, and structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure.  His prior appointments include teaching and industry positions at Louisiana Tech University (Ruston, Louisiana) and Structural Integrity Associates, Inc. (San Jose, CA).

About the Author
James C. McDavid (PhD, Indiana, 1975) is a professor of Public Administration at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. He is a specialist in program evaluation, performance measurement, and performance management. He has conducted extensive research and evaluations focusing on federal, state, provincial, and local governments in the United States and Canada. His published research has appeared in the American Journal of Evaluation as well as the Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation. He is currently a member of the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation.

In 1993, Dr. McDavid won the University of Victoria Alumni Association Teaching Award. In 1996, he won the J. E. Hodgetts Award for the best English-language article published in Canadian Public Administration. From 1990 to 1996, he was Dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Development at the University of Victoria. In 2004, he was named a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Victoria and was also Acting Director of the School of Public Administration during that year. In addition to teaching online courses in the School of Public Administration Graduate Certificate in Evaluation Program, he is a member of the Evaluation Advisory Committee for the Canadian International Development Agency.

Laura R. L. Hawthorn holds a Master of Arts degree in Canadian history from Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Victoria. After completing her MPA, she worked as a manager for several years in the British Columbia public service and non-profit sector before leaving to raise a family. She is currently living in Vancouver, working on her horse farm and being mom to her two small boys.

Extremely wordy

This book is an extremely long read and I found it not very useful at all. I needed it for class, but it is uninteresting and very boring. It takes awhile just to read one chapter.

Paid by the word?

Perhaps this book is the toughest slog of any read so far in my grad classes. The authors managed to make even the simplest of ideas challenging to envision in practice. Try this:

"Although strategic planning is widely accepted as sound management practice for the achievement of objectives, organization theorists have observed that organizations appear, as well, to pursue behavioral goals, which may or may not coincide with statements enshrining the rational purposes of the organization."

Why not simplify as:

Sound management uses strategic planning to achieve objectives. But, in some organizations, stated behavioral goals may not align with the expressed purposes for the organization's existence.

I suspect the authors' confusing writing style creates the need for endless repetition. They need to say nearly everything 3 different ways for the reader to understand.

I feel fortunate that additional class resources and online resources are much easier to comprehend. The topics of project evaluation and performance are not difficult to understand.

This is a required text for a college class. The book is sort of a bore and I would not have read it except for the class. I have read better college level books on this subject. Like much of education, this book takes common sense and hides it behind complex sounding words and terms thus making the obvious seem complex.
