An Excellent Introductory Text

Since there is currently only one other review, which I find very inaccurate, I will throw in my 2 cents.

First of all, I disagree about the readability of Artin's book. I found the presentations crystal clear, and in particular the proofs are very readable. Artin avoids clever tricks when a straightforward approach is available and does a good job explaining the reasoning behind proofs. There are also enough examples to illustrate the concepts presented.

Second, the exercises in Artin are excellent. They provide a way to become familiar with the definitions and techniques in the chapter, as well as illustrate some interesting applications of the material. There are some easy exercises, and some very difficult ones. I'm not sure what more you could ask for.

As far as Dummit and Foote goes, I agree that it is an excellent text. However, I would prefer Artin as an introductory text, since it is a gentler introduction to all the abstraction. Dummit and Foote is a better for a course beyond an introduction, and also serves as a better reference. Anyway, Artin covers a different set of topics than more "standard" texts such as Dummit and Foote, such as plane symmetries and linear groups.

Overall, I think Artin's book is an excellent introduction to abstract algebra. In fact, the two semester course using Artin that I took (taught by the man himself), was one of the best academic experiences of my life.

Good, challenging book

I used this book in an advanced algebra course in which the students learned on their own with minimal guidance from the professor and discussed the assigned readings and homework once a week. I found this book difficult for self-learning. Artin aims for concision in his proofs, making the reader prove some things on his own. This is not necessarily bad, and is often very helpful for the student's learning. But it can be tough and frustrating if you need a hint, or get lost in a proof. In other words, it's perfectly good to leave steps for the reader, provided that the reader can actually fill in the gaps. For that reason, I think this book is best used as a supplement to a professor's lectures, rather than for self-learning. This book does a good job of condensing the material, and the theorems are easy to find, so it is useful when reviewing. I like the topics in the book. One of the aims of this book is to introduce the reader to the various applications of algebra. To this end Artin includes not only the typical algebra material, but also symmetry and imaginary quadratic fields. Unfortunately I found the second edition worse than the first edition in its chapters on fields. Artin took out many examples in the first edition, for reasons I don't know. The chapter on fields is full of definitions and theorems, but in my mind it doesn't elucidate the main ideas and themes effectively. I think Dummit and Foote is much better at explaining basic Galois theory. The exercises, though, are very good. Overall, this is a challenging book; when used effectively in a well-taught course (for example, see Benedict Gross's excellent free online videos on algebra), it should prove to be very rewarding.

Good bargain, but one chapter missing

Cheaper version printed in India (nothing wrong with that). Warning: the book does not include the last chapter on Galois Theory, so this version is shorter (482 pages instead of 543 pages in the regular 2nd edition). Too bad. Other than that, a good bargain.

Anatoly B. Schmidt is a Financial Data Analyst. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Latvian University and has more than forty publications in biophysics, statistical physics, and econophysics.

About the Author
Dr. Anatoly.B. Schmidt holds M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from Latvian
University, Riga. For more than 10 years, Dr. Schmidt was the lead
modeling scientist at the Latvian Center for Biological, Medical, and
Ecological Research. In the 90s, he was engaged for several years in
development of computational chemistry software and in its applications
to life sciences. His research interests include modeling "of
anything", from biological processes to financial markets. His major
fields of expertise are the statistical physics, in particular, the
theory of fluids, (poly)electrolytes and plasmas, the solvation theory
and its applications in biology, and, most recently, quantitative
finance. Dr. Schmidt is the author of the book "Statistical
thermodynamics of classical plasmas" (Energoatomizdat, Moscow, 1991),
and more than 40 publications in biophysics, statistical and chemical
physics, and econophysics. Dr. A.B. Schmidt has been a financial data
analyst since 1997.

needs revisions

I'm also a physicist and larval quantitative finance geek. I bought this book upon my last round of job hunting. This book is pretty obviously the "crib notes" that Dr. Schmidt took in preparing himself for Wall Street interviews, and, IMO, it is a pretty good example of this. I myself have a very similar volume, though I did not have the foresight to do it all in LaTeX as he probably did; I stuck mine in a little moleskine notebook as I was reading other books. I encourage anyone looking for a job outside their original field to construct their own version of such a notebook. This is particularly useful in learning the basics of a complicated field like quantitative finance.

I did not find it a particularly valuable pedagogical tool. There are many useful chapters, and knowing everything in them would be very useful (and impressive) on a job interview. But the chapters were too sparse, and the problem sets too narrow to actually learn from. You can read the words and get the basic idea, but, there isn't enough in the way of examples and "meaty dialog" to really absorb the information. One will need supplimental texts on virtually every useful chapter to actually cover the material presented. Of course, if you already know it, this book is a convenient and useful reference to thumb through to refresh your memory. Also, some things which I at least consider important are not emphasized as much as some things which I consider trivia. One of the difficulties with studying this stuff is knowing what is important.

I also disagree with some of his chapters being included at all. Agent based models seem unlikely to come up in an interview, unless you're interviewing for a very innovative and cutting edge position. In the latter case, the chances are pretty good that you already are very conversant in agent-based models and some kind of statistical physics, and you don't need his introduction. I suppose it might make a good talking point to have seen the idea somewhere, even in a brief explanation. The same applies for the section on chaos theory. Maybe someone out there has some models which touch on the physics of chaos. Will his chapter help you to get such a job? No, it will not. "Chaos theory" (and nonlinear dynamics, as the chapter is called) is a vast subject, and he barely defines it here, let alone shows how it might be useful in quantitative finance. What might have been interesting is a treatment of how chaotic models might be modeled in the ARIMA or GARCH time series frameworks he introduces in previous chapters. Finally, he included a chapter on Fractals which is probably even more useless than the chapters on chaos and agent models.

That said, it is a valuable slim reference. It would be more valuable if it included commentary on the subjects I mentioned and/or more and deeper problem sets. I suppose it could go in a more pedagogical direction, or more of a reference book direction in future editions. I look forward to reading them, and using them to keep my own personal version of "the physicist's compleat notebook on finance" up to date.

Nicely Crafted Econophysics

WHAT amazes me most in this nicely crafted presentation of hot topics in econometrics, mathematical finance, econophysics, and agent-based modeling is how the selection of topics is well-informed and how these pour out smoothly.
I will recommend this book to my own financial economics students as an up-to-date, quick-reference companion to classes and the lab.

The author holds a PhD in Physics, as one might presume. And he needed a manual like this one when he first got a job of financial data analyst. So he later on decided to write a book primarily intended to reach the audience of "physicists who want to work on Wall Street yet have not bothered to read anything about finance". Yet I think the book should be of interest to the financial community at large, academics and practitioners. Great stuff.

This is a good introduction for a Science major who is willing to grasp the basic concepts in Econophysics and Mathematical Finance. This concise book can prepare a reader to the MBA-level text-books on finance. Two chapters, on scaling in finance and agent-based modeling, are of particular interest being the balanced reviews of recent research dispersed in periodic literature. This material describes the dynamic and exciting field of Econophysics where the most important results may be yet waiting to be found. I recommend this books to my students and they, too, find it very useful.

The Patience of a Saint: Australia's Mary MacKillop

While Paul Gardiner's Mary MacKillop: An Extraordinary Australian clearly shows a woman "with the patience of Job" endeavoring to fulfill her duty time and time again, it also depicts an ecclesiastical establishment often doing its best to stop her. So in a quite unintended way, the biography serves as much as an indictment of the Catholic system of administration as it does a laudatory study of Mary MacKillop and the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

The ironic thing is that it was the endless harangues that Sister Mary endured at the hand of the diocesan hierarchies - and not the challenge of bringing education to Australia's poor - that were the real trial. Gardiner relates how a journalist of the time named Stanley Jones writing under the pseudonym "Vagabond" opined that as far as the Sisters of Saint Joseph were concerned, "'the only troubles they had were with officials of their own faith.'" (236)

After all the petty intrigues and squabbles of the Adelaide and Bathurst chapters, I was loath to read more. Bishops and priests openly defying the authority of Rome, men and women with a sworn duty to follow the will of God dissembling in the most shameless fashion. But then came the Brisbane and Sydney narratives and more Adelaide machinations - enough to break the spirit of the most devoted Christian.

As Gardiner points out, the vindication that comes with the canonization of a long-suffering and heroic soul like Mary MacKillop's also carries with it an implicit condemnation of some of those around her: "It seems to be one of the ironic dispositions of providence that Causes for canonisation not only reveal wonderful reflections of the divine in the soul's of God's special friends, but also bring to light the limitations of others of his servants . . . ." (304-305)

Building and staffing schools and convents to educate Australia's poor in the second half of the nineteenth century would have been a Herculean task for anyone. That Mary MacKillop was able to accomplish this work while fighting an almost continual rear guard action within the Catholic Church is a miracle in itself.

Bekah and Megan are used to moving and finding new places to shop. This time they are very new in town, barely having unpacked from the latest move with their dad. Taking time away from the boxes, the siblings decide to browse selections at a local clothing store called Perception. However, as Megan will soon discover, much more than Bekah's perception is about to change.

All of the women's clothing seems to be rather skimpy, but when Bekah finds a style of tank top she likes, Megan can't believe she doesn't see the problem with wearing it. First of all, Daddy would have a fit and second of all, as she is quick to point out, Bekah has enjoyed a rather generous recent growth spurt up top.
Bekah, however, seems insistent that the top would look fine and while fitted, not be too bad or inappropriate. In order to prove it, she finds the nearest changing room, a small enclosure at the center of the store.

A few minutes later, Bekah emerges proudly wearing her chosen green tank top, and Megan is only ready for the sister to admit that she was right as usual. Bizarrely though, Bekah seems to love how it looks, no mention of the way it wraps her breasts so tightly it seems anything but proper or dignified.

So she has big breasts, Bekah complains, everyone likes big breasts. Megan is sure her sister is playing some sort of game, though she isn't sure what it might be, especially when she decides the rest of her outfit needs a change to better match the top. One more visit to the changing room and Bekah has a nice short skirt to go with the fitted top, a skirt Megan says completes the look as their daddy is fond of saying of a teenage harlot.

Bekah doesn't care, and the usual levelheaded girl hardly flinches at the comments, not even when Megan explains that harlot means whore. As she puts it, she'd never charge a guy, but something definitely needs to be done about her shoes.

As the joke continues and Bekah takes an innocent trying on of clothing to new extremes, Megan gets more and more worried about their dad showing up to pick them up, finding even one of his precious daughters dressed in such a way. But is this really a joke... and will Megan ever be able to talk some fashion sense into her stubborn older sister?
