A BLACK BLOOD EXCERPT... Gemma watched Harrison wrench the door open and fly through. Her muscles were tight as she chased him out to the forecourt. She arrived just in time to see Bryan's new truck screeching away with a screaming Sam in its passenger seat.
Harrison stood puffing on the forecourt, his eyes wide with shock, his lips exploding with one repeated expletive. Gemma placed a calming hand on his shoulder as he reached into his pocket for a cell phone. She watched the truck swerve around a car and flinched.
Her eyes scanned the court for any cars she could "borrow" for pursuit, but the need was ripped from her when a motorcycle pulled up and screeched to a halt at her feet.
"Get on." The man kept his eyes on the retreating truck.
Gemma's insides recoiled as she recognized the dark hair and tanned skin of the man from the beach.
"I'm not going anywhere with you!"
"Do you really want do this now? I can't get him back on my own. Now get on the bike!"
Harrison's eyes were wild as his gaze flickered between the two of them.
"Is this..." he began to ask, but was cut off. "Yeah, police?"
Gemma watched him pace away, running a frantic hand through his hair as he spoke. Her legs began to jitter as she looked at the expectant gaze of "beach mystery man" then took on a mind of their own as they swung over the seat.
"Damn it," she muttered as she wound her arms around the man's waist and hoped Harrison would forgive her.

About the Author
Melissa Pearl was born in Auckland, New Zealand, but has spent much of her life abroad, living in countries such as Jordan, Cyprus and Pakistan... not to mention a nine month road trip around North America with her husband. She is now back in NZ and lives with her husband and two sons. She is a trained elementary teacher, but writing is her passion. Since becoming a full time mother she has had the opportunity to pursue this dream and her debut novel hit the internet in November, 2011. She loves learning about the craft of writing and endeavours to make each new book better than the last.

Great Series for young adults and us oldies

I loved this second book in the trilogy and was not disappointed at all by the plot. This novel like the first is captivating and Gemma's internal conflict because of her sense of loyalty is commendable even if a little naive, but then she is little more than a child. The introduction of Gabe intensifies things and culminates in a very suspenseful cliffhanger that makes the next book impossible to resist. Excellent reading from a very good author.

MAGICAL!!

I would like to begin the review of this excellent book by advising those who have not read Golden Blood, the first in the trilogy, to go back and read that before you read Black Blood. Gemma Heart is trying to enjoy the summer with her boyfriend Harrison Granger, before her senior year. But memories of the strange man on the beach and his warnings haunt and frighten her. Her parents, still not happy with her choice of boyfriend, are also not exactly making things easy for them.

The discovery of who exactly Gabe the mysterious man is, throws Gemma into a turmoil bringing into question who she truly is and who her true family is. More questions arise when her father starts acting secretively and going on missions into the past to retrieve the arrow head necklaces of the electus. And why are these expeditions making Gemma so tired?

The final straw comes when Gemma is forced to go back with her family to change history; thus not only ruining Gemma's dreams, but also altering the lives of countless others.

This brilliantly told story deals with horrific betrayal and extreme selfishness. On the other hand it also shows that true love can survive gruelling tests and frightful disagreements. The characters with their very realistic personalities crept even deeper into my heart during this book. The anxiety and suspense in the story are countered by the tender love scenes between Gemma and Harrison.

The author's habit of stating the time and place of each event helped me understand exactly where I was in the story. All this makes Black Blood a comfortably paced and yet enthralling read. I would recommend this book to young adults and adults alike. After reading this book which is more than deserving of its 5 stars, I can't wait to read the next book and hopefully many more by Melissa Pearl. (Ellen Fritz)

On the edge of my seat

The second book in Melissa Pearl's trilogy doesn't disappoint as we follow Gemma and Harrison on their journey.

A surprising twist brings the reader to the edge of their seat and hearts to the throat...well, my reaction anyway, as Gemma continues her struggle against her family to keep her relationship with Harrison.

Pearl continues to build her story to a wonderful crescendo, leaving the end hanging so the reader is compelled to go straight out and buy part 3...which is what I'll be doing as soon as I'm finished here...just kidding, it's already safely tucked onto my Kobo for tomorrow's lunchtime reading :)

Although I have to say I guessed one of the little plot twists at the beginning of part 1, it has only added to the reader interest and I'm keen to see how the conclusion pans out now that the cat is (almost) out of the bag...

I feel I've stumbled onto a winner with Melissa Pearl and I look forward to a long reader/writer relationship, way beyond her trilogy.

About the Author
Rob Hayes recently won the Tom Erhardt Award for Most Promising Playwright. He was also shortlisted in 2013 for the BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum and the Royal Exchange Theatre Hodgkiss Award with director Ned Bennett. Rob’s play STEP 9 (OF 12) ran in the West End at the Trafalgar Studios in 2012, starring Blake Harrison and directed by Tom Attenborough. It had previously been produced at the New Britannia Theatre in 2011. Also in 2011 A Butcher of Distinction received its premiere at the Cock Tavern before transferring to the King’s Head. The play then ran in 2013 at the Old 505 Theatre in Sydney and the Cockpit Theatre in London. Rob’s stageplay Selling Clive won best overall production at the Lost Theatre Festival in 2010. Rob is currently adapting STEP 9 (OF 12) as a feature film for Matt Lucas' John Stanley Productions, as well as developing an original sitcom for them. He also has an original comedy series, False Prophet, in development with Left Bank Pictures.

An Absurdly Funny One Man Black Comedy

No, the title isn't lying to you - this is a play composed entirely of a man having awkward conversations with animals with whom he's had carnal relations. And, no, my title isn't lying to you - it's hysterical.

What unfolds in these five scenes (Dog, Cat, Goat, Monkey, and Bear) is a bleakly comic tragedy perfect for fringe festivals. As Bobby attempts to navigate the adult world and negotiate the inherent loneliness of human existence through his animal affairs, we come to understand and ultimately empathize with him - a remarkable achievement.

Ron Hayes is clearly a talent to be reckoned with - he has a voice and vision that, while perhaps not fully realized yet, remains wholly original. I look forward to his coming work.

Lori has been rethinking her relationship with her fiance. Her best friend and neighbor, Mike, has noticed she has been getting more and more depressed each day he tried to tell her she needed to dump him. Lori scared that Mike is right but still doesn't do anything, until she walks in on her fiance doing doggie on one of the other neighbors that she realizes just how manipulative and horrible her ex really is. Lori not taking any Sh*t kicks him out head held high. With the new change in life Lori takes the bull by the horns and does something she was always trying to talk her ex-fiance into, she gets a membership and the sex club in town. Mike has lusted after his neighbor for years but she is so sweet and innocent and he likes things a little more and is afraid he would scare her off if she knew his sexual proclivities. The last thing Mike expected to see was Lori at Expose, the sex club. Mike thought he was scaring her away but all he did was kindle the fire. After the weekend of outstanding sex Mike runs scared. Lori isn't going to run crying into the night, and before Mike can catch up to her and apologize he just may have lost her for good and it was not fault of his.

Overall, Read the whole thing in no time I wish it had more it wasn't near long enough I think it could have been longer and more detailed about the other suspense events, but I still Loved it. I loved Lori she was a lot stronger than she thinks she is. And the bonus book is one I read last year loved that one too.

I didn't like the book very well. The character of Lori is rather weak. I mostly just wanted to smack her. The only time she showed any spunk was when she kicked her ex out. I wouldn't recommend this book at all.

I didn't need to read the whole thing to know it was gonna be dumb. All Lori did was cry and bitch. I've no idea why Mike wanted her in the first place. She's not even that bright. I really wanted to get this story on my Kindle for so long, and now I just want to get rid of it. Don't be fooled.

Elaborately Artificial Stories from A Profound Artist

I believe C.S. Lewis once defended his turn to fiction by noting that fiction is a much more compelling and subversive means by which to affect and influence an audience's thinking, as opposed to overt theological reflection. David Bentley Hart seems to be taking a similar tack.

As an avid fan of Hart's non-fiction work, I was extremely curious how his foray into fiction would turn out. Based on some of his imaginative and creative essays at First Things, along with the ingenuity as a wordsmith on display in his theological writing and other works, I was expecting great things and wasn't disappointed.

The titular novella is the piece in this volume that is the most quintessentially Hartian, I would say. Employing heavy chunks of dialogue -- as he does through much of this collection, but especially here -- Hart cleverly places concepts, intentions and values in the mouth of his devil which he finds to be in some manner distasteful or false, but which can nonetheless be defended eloquently and rationally. Hart's prose is often opulent, but it was particularly florid and decadent in this piece, serving to accentuate the fantastic conceit of having a devil as long-time friend, as well as all the trappings of high culture. Along with Hart's devil, the character of Pierre Gernet is also highly memorable because of the vivid portrayal of his pure soul, his tragic end, and the supernatural significance of the events surrounding it.

'The House of Apollo' is another fascinating tale that features Julian the Apostate as a central character. The piece depicts Julian's impotent attempts to restore the pagan gods of antiquity to their former glory, after "the Galileans" and their God had already driven them out and displaced them. True to form, Hart (as a classicist) doesn't go for any derisive, cheap apologetic shots but candidly (and fantastically) portrays a world in which the old gods were in their twilight.

In 'A Voice from The Emerald World' Hart is at his most human and profound, exploring the dynamics of a family coping with grief. The emotional center of the piece is a touching, haunting relationship between a father and his son who has behavioral and social abnormalities. Together they regularly retreat to their fabulous bamboo garden which is their Emerald World. As a father of a child who has behaviors which are on the "autism spectrum", this story resonated in a very intimate way. At first, the occurrence of a seemingly abstract, egg-headed theological argument seems out of place in the narrative (though it's quite entertaining), but by the time the story reaches its conclusion, the theological implications of the earlier argument are decidedly immediate and real and not at all abstract.

Like 'Inception' -- the 2010 film by Christopher Nolan -- the central conceptual conceit of Hart's next story 'The Ivory Gate' (which he wrote in 1985) is a multi-tiered oneiric (one of dozens of words I learned while reading this volume) dreamscape, which the main character describes from memory. Unlike Nolan's film, Hart's conceit isn't primarily employed as an action set piece, but as a multi-layered emotional and experiential world which depicts the way in which our dreams aren't necessarily solely pale reflections of our waking life, but that the influence can run in the other direction as well. The way in which our dreams can coax us out of, or into, new understandings and depths, and the way that, since our reality is fundamentally anthropogenic, dreams are, in a sense, just as 'real' as anything else. None of those observations sound particularly original, at least as rendered by me, but the particulars of the story are what make it enjoyable.

Finally, 'The Other' is a short and oblique look at intense longing.

There is always a temptation to seek out some common thread or theme in a short story collection, and Hart reveals in an introductory apologia what it is for us: "I had originally intended to make the subtitle of this volume Elaborately Artificial Stories, since I have chosen five stories which are willfully extravagant in form and content, rather than any of the drier, more 'realistic' stories I have also written." There you have it. Though I would add that one other common thread is, of course, the voice of the author. Sometimes breaking through in quite overt ways, usually from the voice of characters, many ideas and subjects of Hart's other works make appearances. One character proclaims a familiar disdain for (or perhaps pity of) materialists; there is at least one mention of the basilica and its effects, which featured prominently in a recent essay on religion in America by Hart; he has previously written an essay on Julian the Apostate; the denunciation of the pitiless, calloused theology of certain forms of Christianity, which he has renounced elsewhere etc. Within the context of these stories, though, all of his ideas seem fresh and are given a new texture, depth and life, which lends credence to his claim that God is no more likely (and indeed perhaps less likely) to be encountered in theology than in poetry and fiction.

Vintage Hart (but in Fiction)

When I first heard that the inimitable David Bentley Hart was publishing a collection of short stories I was almost as excited as when I heard that Hart is publishing a (still forthcoming) translation of the New Testament. Hart is a Greek Orthodox theologian and classicist. He authored the staggering book, Atheist Delusions, a few years back, for which he won the Michael Ramsey Prize. He is also a frequent contributor to First Things, where he is currently authoring the concluding article for each issue. Furthermore, his The Doors of the Sea is one of the more erudite and provocative takes on theodicy that I have ever seen.

Hart is an intellectual who writes theology and history and observations with a certain literary flourish that stops just short of being pretentious but just after the point of establishing his brilliance as a thinker and writer. He is a wordsmith with a keen sense of insight and perception. I almost never read him when I don't come away bettered by the experience.

The thought of DBH writing fiction seemed only natural to me when I first heard of it, and it was with bated breath that Mrs. Richardson and I dove into the collection which we finished just a couple of days ago. The Devil and Pierre Gernet is vintage Hart: lush and occasionally recondite writing that never leads the reader so far afield that they cannot see at least the shadows of the intended gist. I kept thinking of Umberto Eco while reading Hart's fiction, an analogy that he perhaps would not appreciate given his recent piece on Eco, self-explanatorily entitled "The Inertia of Reputation." What I mean, though, is that Hart's writing and style and approach is Ecoan at its best, which is to say that it tantalizes with arcanae without losing the reader in the author's own idiosyncratic intelligence.

The stories are quite interesting. "The Devil and Pierre Gernet" reads somewhat like a more nuanced Screwtape Letters set in narrative. It is less didactic in nature, but equally forceful in its effect. "The House of Apollo," perhaps my favorite of the stories, deals with Julian the Apostate's efforts at the re-paganization of the Roman Empire. It is pitiful and humorous in its depiction of the frustrated Emporer's misguided efforts and, perhaps more than any of these stories, depicts the central themes of Atheist Delusions in a fictional vehicle. "A Voice from the Emerald World" was probably the most moving of the stories, depicting as it does a married couple's efforts at coping with the death of their child. "The Ivory Gate" and "The Other" are both well-written but curious stories on which I continue to ruminate, the former being about a dying man's struggle with transendence and the implications of his own recurring dreams, the latter being about...well...as I say, I'm still ruminating on it!

The reading of these stories requires some effort and some work, as the reading of most great stories inevitably does. If you would like to read some very well-written, occasionally challenging, frequently humorous and always worthwhile tales, this is a great book to which to turn.

Beauty, emotion and depth

Well, I discovered the devil has as big of a vocabulary as David Bentley Hart, who would have thought? :) This book resulted in well over 100 words added to my vocabulary builder on my kindle and those were only the ones I looked up. It was a bit obnoxious. The worst part was reading his descriptions of the physical surroundings; he would occasionally carry on and on, and well, it was rather hard to visualize; since I would need to look up every other word to even know what he was describing or the definition of adjectives being used to color objects known.
But with those complaints aside, there was much beauty, emotion and depth within these pages. The "A Voice from the Emerald World" completely wrecked me, when I finished my cheeks were wet with tears and I walked through my house in a daze. "The Ivory Gate" actually resulted in the following nights being filled with dreams more vivid and rich. Every story Hart wrote stirred within me the desire to write something myself.

This work is supported by two current EPSRC grants on 'the effects of surface alteration of stone on moisture and pollutant uptake' and 'The catastrophic decay of building sandstones'. Alice V. Turkington Alice Turkington is Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography, University of Kentucky.
