Lorin D’Costa is an International Master and a full-time chess teacher. He coaches some of the top chess schools in the UK, some of England’s strongest junior players, and also the England team at World and European Youth Championships.

Great book, but falsely advertised by Amazon

I'm a tournament player with an Expert rating and have played the Scheveningen throughout my chess career. One of my best games ever was a win with the Scheveningen against an International Master in a major tournament in New York City. So I was eager to read this book. I'm about half way through and can say without hesitation that it is exceptional. The move-by-move commentary is an ideal approach for learning this opening because mastery of the Scheveningen depends more on understanding core ideas and piece placements than on memorization of variations. Also, most of the games are from major Grandmaster tournaments of the past several years. The author's writing style is reminiscent of John Nunn's wonderful book "Understanding Chess Move by Move".

One warning regarding the Kindle edition (the version I bought): It was listed on Amazon with a print length of 360 pages. The high number of pages (compared to most other chess opening books I own) was one of the main reasons I bought it. However, I discovered afterwards that the actual print length of the hardcopy version of this book is only 272 pages! As it tunrs out, Amazon "estimates" the print length of Kindle books by "using settings to closely represent a physical book". It's a blatant form of false advertising when the estimated print length is 88 pages longer than the actual print length! Why not just list the actual print length instead of using this highly mis-leading method? Shame on Amazon for "rigging the numbers" in this manner!

Update: a few days after I wrote the above comments, Amazon updated the description of the Kindle version on its website. It now shows a print length of 272 pages instead of the misleading 360.

Best chess book ever!

This Scheveningen move-by-move book from D'Costa is literally the best chess book I have ever purchased. I am not a professional reviewer, but I was compelled to write this after purchasing so many openings books that disappointed me. He uses the Socratic method on every page, with questions like "Why does black play his f6 knight to e8 instead of d7?" And then he shows you the tactical possibilities as well as the more subtle positional advantages. Since I'm only rated 1400 there is a lot of stuff over my head I'm sure, but I'm still getting a ton out of this book. Imagine if Irving Chernev wrote a book on an opening, but then embellished even more on the ideas and concrete variations within the opening. I knew the sicilian could be tricky, but he is sharing tactics to watch out for every couple moves that I just don't have eyes to see in an over-the-board game. I feel like I'm not just learning openings, but the middle-game too. The games he selected are mostly recent (2009, 2010) but for instructional purposes he uses some older games as well. The first chapter is Kasparov and the Scheveningen, and by itself it's worth the price of the book. It is written from black's perspective, but he never makes outlandish claims like "black has a won game here" when the position still has possibilities. If you already play this opening, or you are looking for something you can play with a more thorough understanding, buy this book.

The book about Scheveningen is a very useful book. First of all it is impossible to play sicilian defense without understanding Scheveningen. In his book D'Costa showed every possible variations and explains main strategical aspects of Scheveningen. It is a hard work to go through and understand the ideas of the variations and the games (very nicely selected by the way) but it is definetely pays off.

It is about good, old and infamous Project Management

Agile Project Management with Kanban by Eric Brechner is very different from the last two books about Kanban I have had an opportunity to read recently (Kanban in Action and Kanban from the Inside). It is about good, old and infamous Project Management, something, what many Agile or Lean orthodox people call bad and dead. It briefly presents precise and actionable ways how to apply Kanban as a tool for organizations of different kind and size. Despite being written by a guy who worked for a huge product development organization (Xbox/Microsoft), the book manages to escape insanely popular trend of telling how to scale Kanban, just as consulting business suggests to scale Scrum or Agile. Instead it meets the reality of any software or product development teams, which do not work independently. It comes with an open letter to upper management, which needs to support evolution toward Kanban, as well as with questions and more important answers you may need to convince your peers, working with Waterfall or Scrum in the past.

You won't find here too many details about theories behind Lean and Kanban, but just enough to know where to look for it and why things work better this way. The author, moreover, offers ready-to-use Excel sheets, to calculate just a few, but super important numbers and metrics for your team, so you can track some KPIs and improve based on real data, not just your gut feeling. In the end there’s a big chance your gut feelings will be consistent with data trends, and Kanban will guide you to better predictability, less waste and rework, more evenness and joy of work.

Very concise! Highly recommended!

We had a supposed (certified) scrum master where I worked last but being my first experience with it, I was shocked how unproductive our processes were. After learning what scrum was supposed to be like, I realized how saying you practice scrum and doing scrum are two different things. Our bug tracking software (Fogbugz) included a Kanban board which got me interested in researching the subject which ultimately led to this wonderful book. After reading it, I have to admit I think this is going to be better than scrum. Can't wait to try it out. This book is highly recommended!

I love this book

I love this book, and I _love_ using Kanban. I use it at work, and my family uses it at home to track schoolwork, chores, and even some house projects. It made a huge difference for tracking schoolwork. I evangelize Kanban to friends and coworkers, and when I do, I point them to this book as a starting point. Simply put, Kanban works better than anything else I have tried - it strips away the unneeded stuff and focuses you on what you need to be doing with very minimal overhead. It is very flexible so you can adjust it for your needs once you master the basics, even to the point to adapting to the space you have available for you Kanban board.

Full disclosure: I work on one of the teams Eric referenced in this book. The picture of our Kanban board in the book was very early on when our team was still learning to use the full power of Kanban. We've improved on that early board a bit by optimizing it for our team over the 4+ years we've been using it, but even in the "early learning stages" Kanban worked better than anything else we'd ever tried. Like anything else, the longer you do use a tool, the better you get at using it, and our team is no exception.

Seriously testing my gag reflex

I've never written a book review on here, but I put a lot of weight on reviews and ratings when choosing books on here. I felt the need for this book, because I can only assume the 5 star rating for this book is seriously skewed by the delirious tween Twi-hard fan club. I read the first book of the series and went through it pretty fast. First half, I was loving it, then I realized it was mostly due to the anticipation of finding out what they were. Once that happened, novelty wore off pretty quickly. But I'm not a quitter and persevered to read this 2nd book in the series.
The overall plot and character dynamics follow the same predictable template this genre seems to stick to. Barely legal girl must choose between two men who profess their undying love for her- One impossibly old, mysterious and brooding who ignites passion and another somewhat normal, safe All-American boy/best-friend. Blah blah, sound familiar???
The whole `everyone line up to protect Evie!' while Evie does everything possible to come up with some stupid half-brained idea to sacrifice herself to protect her friends. "No! I won't allow you to sacrifice yourself for me! Let me sacrifice for you because I just can't possibly live without you!" It got so old and tiresome I wanted to throw my Kindle across the room.
So the times that Evie swings over to Team Reed, it gets sickening after awhile. I can only take so many "You are so perfect", "You make my blood boil", etc before my eyes roll back in my head permanently and I hurl.
If you are looking for the cookie cutter template from Twilight, Immortals, etc then great, you would probably like it (though I thought Twilight was better overall). If you are slightly more emotionally evolved then look elsewhere. I don't think I've ever just quit a trilogy in the midst, but I've made an exception. I don't think I can stomach reading another 300 pages without my brain turning to mashed potatoes.

Whole Other Level!

I read the first book (Inescapable) in a few days and really liked it! You become pretty invested in the characters, but nothing like you do in this book! Amy Bartol creates a much more complex world and brings the drama and romance to a whole other level. At the end of this book I was dying to know what happens in the third one. I loved the introduction of the new characters SPOILER ALERT:I cannot tell you how much more I love this villain vs the one introduced in the first one. Such a great and fun read that has you begging for more at the end! Can't wait for the 3rd installment!!!

Kept me up all night!

This is the 2nd book in the Premonition Series & I can't believe Ms. Bartol was able to out do book one. I read a lot of paranormal genre books, but this series is outstanding! Rarely do I stay up past midnight reading. I can usually put a book down & let my better judgement win out on the fact that I have to get up in the morning. Intuition is so engrossing & action packed, I couldn't turn my kindle off.
I am on pins & needles to know what will happen next. Like a reviewer above, I don't want to read the excerpt from the next book. It will be too much of a tease to bear!

Some numeric feats depend on rote learning a lot of data, but other ones are much easier to perform with just a little training: Presh Talwalkar presents a lot of them, all of which are manageable for an average person. I particularly liked the multiplication of two numbers near 200, 300, ... and the division by 19. The nice thing is that *every* trick is presented with its mathematical explanation, so that the mistery of magic vanishes... but only for the initiati!
