If you liked the first book, you'll love the second!

I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment in the Teresa Maddux saga. Once the story got going it was a non-stop adventure that was very difficult to put down. I loved all the twists and turns and Reese continues to be, "my kind of anti-hero."

PreSchool-Grade 3-Using a common motif, this Balinese folktale tells of a mother who leaves her twin daughters home alone with a warning against opening the door to strangers. An ogress poses as the girls' mother, tricks them into unlocking the door, and carries them off with the intention of cooking them. When the mother finds her children gone, help comes from the family's pig, who promises to bring the sisters home safely. To accomplish the rescue, the animal dresses up in a sarong and is accompanied by a tiny frog band and a mouse bearing a torch. The odd little procession succeeds in drawing the ogress out of her house to dance while the mouse frees the twins. The vibrant acrylic, watercolor, and gouache illustrations represent the flora, fauna, and costumes accurately in an appropriate folk-art style. The charms of the book include the sarong-draped pig dancing and peeking coyly over her fan; the frog band; and the small, helpful mouse. The ogress Rangsasa, with flamelike hair and clawlike, red nails, is suitably scary but, in true folklore style, perishes in the flames of her house. A source note lends authority, a brief statement gives cultural background information, and a pronunciation guide helps with unfamiliar words though it does not give definitions. Twin sisters Klodan and Klonching must stay at home while their mother goes to sell seeds in the market. Lurking in the forest shadows is the Rangsasa, an ogress who would like to snatch them away. Mother admonishes," When I return I will knock on the door three times and say, `Klodan, Klonching. It's your mother. Let me in.'" How the Rangsasa manages to trick the sisters--and how their mother, with the help of the dancing pig, comes to the rescue--is what sets this lovely tale from Bali apart from thematically similar stories. Sierra, a professional storyteller, deftly catches the rhythm, humor, and suspense of an oral tale. Her well-paced prose is sprinkled with Balinese words; a pronunciation guide is thoughtfully included. Sweetwater's bright, patterned illustrations sometimes fall short in their underlying use of line and color, but they lovingly depict the warmth between mother and daughters, as well as the whimsy inherent in a dancing pig and four frog musicians. Sierra's retelling of this Balinese folktale has a kind of mesmerizing uninflected delivery that chugs attractively along, while Sweetwater's artwork flickers with vivid folk imagery draped in tropical colors. Klodan and Klonching care so much for the family pig that they dance the classic Legong to keep it entertained. Also benefiting from the liquid movements and kindnesses of the girls are the house mouse and the band of frogs who provide the beat for the dance. An ogress, the Rangsasa, jealously watches the proceedings from the woods until one day when the girls' mother must go to the market to scare up some cash for the family needs. The Rangsasa tricks the girls into opening the doorwhich their mother had expressly forbiddenand steals them off to her cottage to eat them. The animals intervene in a crafty maneuver that involves the pig's entrancing interpretation of the Legong. The girls are freed and they make off with a boodle of the ogress's wealthshe won't need it, having been engulfed in the flames of her cottageas is just. The Dancing Pig is one of the best books that I've ever bought for my son. He was captured by the story and didn't take his eyes off the book at any time, and even better, he didn't stop my reading to ask a question. The well written story and the many brilliant full page illustrations definately added to my son's increased interest. The culture oriented story line and illustrations in The Dancing Pig brings a feel of beautiful island of Bali. The author and illustrator must have spent time there in order to produce such a marvelous book. I strongly recommend the book. Your family will treasure this book!

Great story of Hansel and Gretel from Bali

This is a wonderful book that tells the traditional tale of Hansel and Gretel with a Balinese twist. Instead of Hansel and Gretel the main characters are sisters, Klodan and Klonching. They live in a small house in Bali that is nestled in between a rice field and a dark forest. When their mother goes out to the market she leaves the girls at home alone and tells them not to open the door to anyone. The "witch" tricks the girls into opening the door and takes them into the forest to eat them. With the help of a dancing pig, mouse, and small frog band the mother is able to get the girls back safety. A definite must read for all who love the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel.
The only negative part of this book are some of the images are kind of scary for young readers.

From the "9 Months Later" series - Recommended

Years after her first love married someone else, Heather Sweeney still carries a torch for Russell. Now a medical condition leads to early infertility. So when explosive passion leads her to bed with T.J. Collins, Heather does not care if she becomes pregnant. In fact, part of her hopes that she does. Once she learns of her pregnancy, however, Heather informs T.J. of her condition and asks him to marry her.
T.J. fears setting expectations that he cannot meet. He would rather decline involvement in Heather's life and their unborn child than to somehow fail them. With his previous family, he has already proven that even if he occasionally gets something right, he always disappoints his loved ones in the end. Only in the intimacy of their bedroom does he freely show his feelings for Heather. But the question remains how long that can be enough for either of them.
C.J. Carmichael takes a challenging position with her heroine in FOR A BABY. Heather deliberately allows herself to get pregnant, and her marital expectation of T.J. seems wildly unfair given their situation. Only the fact that he so easily capitulates redeems the situation. While she might be a woman who always tried to the right thing, Heather's long term fantasy regarding Russell's refusal to accept his emotions and Heather's machinations make for a rather cold beginning to a read that becomes remarkably tender by the end. While that extreme shift of tone provides a lovely read when all is said and done, it does require the reader to persevere. FOR A BABY comes recommended.

Goings on in a small town

Heather Sweeney has not had very good luck with love. She had a baby out of wedlock with her high school boyfriend and gave the baby up for adoption, and then her husband a Canadian Mountie was shot to death pulling over a crazy driver. Then she finds out that she has tumers in her uterus that would force her to have a hysterectumy in the not so distent future. The day she finds out about the tumers T.J Collins comes in to her rescue at the bar she was at and they go back to her house and make love.

Several months later she finds out she is pregnant and tells T. J they have to get married beccause it would look bad to her students. They do get married, but it is totally different than what they were expecting. One of the major things that they have problems with is his daugter by a previous marriage. He thinks that he should have no contact with her because she has a step-father, but Heather does not agree.

Things get worse when the sister of two of her students comes into her classroom and asks her questions that make it ovious that she is pregant. Heather gets involved in helping this girl, but her boyfriend, Ryan does not like it.

After several months of this Ryan wants his girlfriend to have an abortion, but his girlfriend does not want one. The day that the abortion is sceduled for Heather meets the girlfriend at Heathers house but Ryan comes in and makes them go into his girlfriends truck. He makes Heather, who is 8 and 1/2 months pregnant, drive over to a pasture near his house and makes her get out of the car. It is in the middle of a blizzard, so Heather is worried about the baby. She starts walking, but soon gets really cold.

T.J who had been out, came back to the house and calls around to find his wife. He eventually finds her, but then she starts going into labor several weeks early.

Things turn out fine in the end, the baby is perfect. Ryan is arrested and his girlfriend isn't hurt, but still is pregnant and Heather and T.J. find out that they really do love eachother

Great book

This was not your typical romance. They were married for most of it but they had to work on it. There were some twist that you don't see coming so it does not get predictable. I really enjoyed it.

I loved this book!

I learned so much about George Lucas, his family, and his movies. I would defiantly recommend this book for all ages. Though it is an easy read, it is truly a great book.

Great book for elementary school projects!

My 10 year old was doing research on a famous Californian for their 4th grade California history project. He chose George Lucas and this book helped him with all the facts and history about him. It's paperback with some illustrations. Easy to read. My son was able to give a 3 minute speech about George Lucas in front of his entire class a room full of parents!

A wonderful book for infopreneurs who want to sell distance learning programs.

I loved this book. I really liked it a lot! I'm in the process of putting together a virtual business that will provide a distance learning program, some publications, and a coaching service. Having this book to read was wonderful because it discusses the ins and outs of putting together an online education business, which is what distance learning programs are.

There are a number of books available today regarding infopreneurship and being an infopreneur. Creating articles, booklets, books, and reducing them to PDF files is the simplest way to be an infopreneur. But putting together teaching programs and providing the PDF files coupled with back and forth interaction through email and/or telephone is a bit more involved. It's still infopreneurship, but it is also distance learning or an online education business. This book explains what online education is about. And it gives you lots of resources and things to think about if you decide to take the plunge and start your own online education business. It has 14 chapters and two lists of resources in its appendix:

1. Learning for a Better Life
2. Entering the Online Learning Market
3. Start-up strategies
4. Online education goes to school
5. Tuning up knowledge workers
6. Lifelong online learning

I was disappointed with Chapter 8 that discussed Choice of Entity (COE) issues and Business Plans. The COE material was VERY poor, and even wrong at times. LLCs don't dissolve just because an owner dies. The author simply did not know what he was talking about. Consider getting a copy of "Structuring Your Business" (ISBN: 1593371772) to get good information about COE. I've posted a book review for that book on Amazon, too. I think there should have been a full chapter devoted to business plans in this book. But there wasn't. Consider getting a copy of "Business Models Made Easy" (ISBN: 1599180413). I've posted a book review for that book on Amazon, too.

If you are wanting to build and run an online education business like me, then definitely get a copy of "Four Steps to Building a Profitable Coaching Practice" (ISBN: 0595296602). I've posted a book review for that book on Amazon, too. Three other books I highly recommend you read to supplement Mr. Mintzer's book are: "Mastering Online Marketing" (ISBN: 1599181517), "Web Business Success" (ISBN: 0974924504), and "The Web Savvy Writer" (ISBN: 0977830403). This last book is not currently being sold on Amazon. Google "websavvywriter" to find the author's site and you can buy it from her directly.

What I liked the most about this book was the number and quality of URLs provided of real life distance learning Web sites. They can be found in the body of the book and in the appendix (A1). The Glossary was a disappointment. Also, I found the expenses listed in starting and running an online education business to be high. In fact, very high! If you do the research necessary to write a sound 25-35 page business plan, then you will realize how off the mark the expenses listed in this book really are. It is possible to start such a business for next to nothing except for your time in creating your business plan and your product(s). 5 stars!

Can't Write

The first redundant paragraph demonstrated this person can't write. I read to page 3 and it was filled with the same information. I have never sent a book back to any dealer. I was shocked at the poor writing. This needed to be heavily edited then it may have been a good book. I was getting this book for myself and my friend ... we are both online teachers. I sent both back.

It appears that the publishers took chapters from other books and simply built this book. There is very little content devoted to the business of online education. Much of what the book spoke of was about naming, forming, funding and promoting any online business. This book was poorly researched.

W. Sibley Towner is Professor Emeritus of Biblical Interpretation at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia. He is the author of How God Deals With Evil and David, a volume in the Interpretation commentary series.

I am using this commentary in my preparation for leading a weekly class of older adult laity in a retirement community. I have found Dr. Towner's discussions very helpful in our chapter by chapter discussions. The text is clear and sufficiently detailed, but not too academic for our purposes.
