From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3–Irving and Muktuk are accused of stealing a shipment of blueberry muffins that was stored in a waterfront warehouse. The two polar bears swear tearfully that they are innocent, but, as they set out to prove it, they seem more and more suspect. To look like detectives, they steal hats from the Zoo Director and go in search of clues. As they sniff their way closer to the truth, their memory gets jogged concerning the actual nature of events. Kids will love the cartoon drawings rendered in felt-tip marker and ink. The white bears outlined in black ink, one wearing a red hat, the other a yellow one, contrast delightfully with a midnight-blue sky and colorful city buildings as they stride through the streets. This charming mystery will have kids guessing. This story is great for independent mid-level readers and as a read-aloud.–Wanda Meyers-Hines, Ridgecrest Elementary School, Huntsville, AL

From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 2. This new book about muffin-loving Irving and Muktuk turns the hard-boiled detective tradition on its ear with mischief that will make preschoolers laugh as much as the adults who read to them. When a large shipment of Italian designer muffins disappears from a waterfront warehouse, the two polar bears are the chief suspects. Facing the slammer, they cry and declare their innocence ("Our names are smirched"), then sneak out of the zoo to find the real thieves. But why do the clues lead back to the zoo? The pictures of the big, white bears outlined in ink and performing against brightly colored backgrounds add to the fun as they act tough to the bossy authorities, sniff out (literally) the bad guys, and surprise everyone, including themselves. A recommended pick for ages 6-8.
By Midwest Book Review
Irving and Muktuk have been accused of the baked goods crime of the century - but the bears are innocent, and set out to clear their bad reputations. This is the fourth book in the Irving and Muktuk series, but the first we've seen: it's a lovely detective story spiced with Jill Pinkwater's fine drawings and is a recommended pick for ages 6-8.

Choosey Chapter Book Readers Choose Pinkwater
By Pop Bop
No one does deadpan absurd better than Daniel Pinkwater. From early readers through YA high schoolers there are books for only the hippest of kids.

The Larry the Polar Bear books and the Irving and Muktuk books are ideal for starting readers who can follow the slightly skewed action. Larry is a solo act and has considerable charm as an eccentric character. Irving and Muktuk are a bit different. They are "Bad Bears". They are unrepentant muffin thieves and are not to be trusted.

In this installment an entire shipment of important Italian muffins has been stolen, and Irving and Muktuk are the prime suspects. They decide to take things into their own hands in an effort to clear their names. If not, they face a year behind bars, (which is pretty funny since they live in a zoo). We get to follow the guys as they play detective. Muktuk is a bit more grounded than Irving, who is more along the lines of comic relief. You can think Abbott and Costello, but the dialogue is absurd enough to be more reminiscent of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.

In any event, a good time is had by all and the mystery is ultimately solved. In my experience not every kid gets the Bad Bears, and sometimes a year or two difference in age makes a difference in how they respond. But, I'd certainly want to have one or two around to try out.

Please note that I found this book while browsing the local library's Kindle books, and downloaded it for free. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

My Son's New Favorite
By Tara Misu
As my son approaches 6 and gets a tad more sophisticated, the Bad Bear books have overtaken Mo Willems's Piggy and Gerald series as his favorite read. The mischeivous side of him gets full expression through these bears and their muffin-pilfering antics.
In this one, you see the bears accused of a great muffin crime; they tearily claim innocence. Now, if you are concerned about kids lying, this is not the book for you. The bears either lie beautifully, or have managed to tell themselves that they didn't do it so much or so often that they truly believe it to be a fact-- much like children do. They rediscover the muffins they had stolen and hidden while attempting to clear their "smirched" names.
Funny and cleverly written as ever-- this series is an outstanding read-aloud that parents will actually enjoy as much as their kids.
And if the deviousness of these bears are too much for you, there is always Piggy and Gerald.

It's cliff notes. They work. I think a person should use it as an additional tool towards understanding some of the writers intentions in the book and not relying on the cliff notes to replace reading the book. This is a wonderful story, written in a way that I could not put it down after about the first few pages. It is an easy read and a small book and you would miss out on a lot if you use the cliff notes incorrectly but as far as cliff notes go this one was very helpful.

Long, but detailed.
By MAB
"Cliffsnotes Hemingway's the Old Man and the Sea" are decent, but at times very long, but that is because of the detail. If you need to understand the symbolism, then these CliffsNotes are a must! As always, you should read the CliffsNotes AFTER you have read "The Old Man and the Sea." I recommmend.

The Ethics of Intelligence: A new framework (Studies in Intelligence), by Ross W. Bellaby

This book starts from the proposition that the field of intelligence lacks any systematic ethical review, and then develops a framework based on the notion of harm and the establishment of Just Intelligence Principles.

As the professional practice of intelligence collection adapts to the changing environment of the twenty-first century, many academic experts and intelligence professionals have called for a coherent ethical framework that outlines exactly when, by what means and to what ends intelligence is justified. Recent controversies, including reports of abuse at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib, allegations of extraordinary rendition programmes and the ever-increasing pervasiveness of the ‘surveillance state’, have all raised concerns regarding the role of intelligence in society. As a result, there is increased debate regarding the question of whether or not intelligence collection can be carried out ethically.

The Ethics of Intelligence tackles this question by creating an ethical framework specifically designed for intelligence that is capable of outlining under what circumstances, if any, different intelligence collection activities are ethically permissible. The book examines three of the main collection disciplines in the field of intelligence studies: imagery intelligence, signals intelligence and human intelligence. By applying the ethical framework established at the beginning of the book to these three important intelligence collection disciplines, it is possible to better understand the ethical framework while also demonstrating its real-life applicability.

This book will be of much interest to students of intelligence studies, ethics, war and conflict studies, security studies and IR.

War Scare, by Peter Pry, Peter Vincent Pry

Why do some American intelligence officials maintain fallout shelters and private contingency plans to evacuate their families in the event of a Russian nuclear strike―even in today's post-Cold War era of U.S.-Russian partnership? The frightening answer lies within the pages of War Scare, a terrifying assessment of the prospect for nuclear holocaust in our day. Written by Peter Vincent Pry, a former CIA military analyst, War Scare provides a history of our country's little-known brushes with nuclear war and warns that, contrary to popular opinion and the assurances of our political leaders, the possibility of a Russian attack still exists. Nuclear deterrence has been the foundation of Western security for the last 50 years, but since the end of the Cold War, Russian military doctrine has become more destabilizing, and much more dangerous, than is commonly believed.

By making use of a wealth of declassified and unclassified material, Dr. Pry illustrates how Russia's brutal past continues to shape the consciousness and decision making of its leaders, many of whom are unreconstructed ideologues from the old Soviet regime. Gripped by a perpetual perception of imminent threat―a war scare―the Russian General Staff, which controls the technical capability of launching a nuclear strike, has shown itself to be unstable at best. The author explores recent history and near-disasters such as the Bosnian crisis, the Norway missile incident, and U.S. air strikes on Iraq from the perspective of the Russian General Staff, believing that only by understanding their viewpoint can we minimize the risk of unintentionally provoking a deadly attack. Wary of NATO expansion and reeling from the Russian economy's descent into chaos, the General Staff may interpret Western military exercises and operations in the Middle East and elsewhere as concealing surprise aggression against Russia. This is a grave situation, indeed, as even after the START I, II, and III agreements, Russia will retain enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world―not to mention significantly expanded chemical and biological warfare capability. War Scare convincingly shows that we ignore these facts at our peril.

From Library Journal
The arrival of the year 2000 will find humankind's basket of worries distressingly full, with issues like Y2K, global warning, and biological terrorism lurking around the corner. Yet how many Americans worry about the Russian nuclear arsenal and the threat of surprise nuclear war? Not enough, warns Pry, a former CIA intelligence officer. Drawing on his experience with the Agency and a close review of public sources, Pry argues that we have been closer to nuclear war with Russia than top U.S. officials dare to admit. Pry's accounts of five war scares since 1983 and his review of the profound internal crisis in Russia are not for the faint of heart. Even if we disagree with him on just how close to nuclear Armageddon we actually are, his book reminds us that Russia's nuclear force poses a genuine threat to U.S. national security far into the 21st century. It also reminds us that the Clinton administration's nuclear-risk-reduction proposals are much more than another foreign giveaway. It is unfortunate that War Scare, so long in the works, does not provide an updated assessment of relations between Russia and the West in the aftermath of NATO's expansion and the Kosovo conflict, when East-West relations have nose-dived. Otherwise, it is a valuable book.AJohn Raymond Walser, U.S. Dept of State, Washington, DC

About the Author

PETER VINCENT PRY, formerly with the CIA, is currently a professional military advisor to the U.S. House of Representatives on national security issues./e In an award honoring his years of service, the CIA stated: A noted expert in his field, Dr. Pry conducted groundbreaking research that illuminated one of the most important issues of our time, the U.S.-Soviet nuclear competition. On the vanguard of strategic intelligence analysis during the Cold War, he developed much of what the U.S. government knows about Soviet planning for nuclear war, including Soviet views of the character of war, perceptions of U.S. intentions, assessment of the nuclear balance, and operational plans. In the post-Cold War period, his work has been central to the U.S. government's understanding of evolving Russian threat perceptions and military doctrine, and the construction of new paradigms for strategic warning and stability assessments. He lives in Annandale, Virginia.

Almost but not quite
By Robert M. Pallotti
This book by Dr. Pry serves as an important reminder that nuclear weapons are still a major problem for the forseeable future. The end of the Cold War has lulled many to sleep feeling that nuclear weapons, or the possibility of global thermonuclear war ended in 1991. This book reminds us that others see the world differerntly from ourselves. It raises the issue that if a major power feels insecure that is bad news for everyone. The strength of the book lies in its raising this nuclear debate once again. Some of the interpretations about Russian activites concerning nuclear weapons (third generation) border on the speculative and serve only to create a sense of panic that one associates with the 1980's Committeee for the Present Danger. However, even if one disagrees or is uneasy with some of the argument in Dr. Pry's book one is faced with the undeniable reality that nuclear weapons are still a major problem for international relations and the future of the planet. If this book serves to serve notice to the world to wake up and to rejoin the debate about this important topic then it has accomplished a great thing indeed.

An absolute must read!

It is a great pity that, unfortunately, it is to the choir that Peter Pry preaches. His current work, WAR SCARE, follows in the footsteps of his earlier works on the Israeli nuclear program and the strategic nuclear balance of the Cold War. All are meticulously researched and written. Those who don't want to hear the message won't read the book. However, those who yearn to know how dangererous the Cold War was, and how dangerous the current international environment is, will read the book.
WAR SCARE details how close the world came to nuclear annhilation in the early 1980s and over and over again well into the Clinton Administration. The details of WAR SCARE, when coupled with the findings of the Cox Committee's report on Communist Chinese nuclear espionage, lead one to seriously question who the Clinton Administration serves, the American people, or themselves, or, more ominously, someone else.
WAR SCARE ought to be in the required reading list of all American History/Government/Civics classes.

How to respond to the war threat
By David Horton
Yes, the atom has been split: And splitting atoms makes possible the building of great big bombs. Yet many remain in denial of these facts instead of taking measures to minimize risks. Peter Pry's book should convince us that the threat of nuclear assault is higher than ever: Russia now considers a nuclear first strike the preferred means of preempting a nuclear attack upon herself, but also an option to answer threats from conventional weapons: "The role of nuclear weapons today remains even more important than it was during the Cold War," Viktor Surikov, Director, Institute of Defense Studies, September 10, 1996. The projected losses from a nuclear exchange between Russia and the United States were published in the Journal of The American Civil Defense Association in December, 1996; 165,000,000 deaths for the United States, and for Russia, less than she absorbed in World War II. Russia has long considered nuclear war not only thinkable but winnable. Our inaction in the face of the threat makes their calculations more certain. Our lack of preparedness invites the very catastrophe we dread. Once we wake up to the "Russian point of view" as so thoroughly set out in Dr. Pry's book, two conclusions are obvious: First, the federal government has failed completely to discharge its Constitutional responsibility to "provide for the common defense," and second, if we are to protect ourselves and thereby increase our chances of survival and reduce the risk of a nuclear attack, we must begin on our own initiative. Several steps can be taken: 1. The completion in our own towns of the fallout shelter survey that was started in the 1960's will show where hundreds of millions of people can take shelter and survive. 2. Asking our local planning commissions to require shelter spaces in new construction will expand our inventory and reduce heating and cooling requirements for the buildings affected. 3. Urging our state legislatures to provide tax exemptions on shelters built into houses and businesses will encourage citizens to use their own capital to increase their own chances of survival, thereby making the "nuclear option" less attractive to the Russians (and to the Chinese, who already claim to hold 20% of our population hostage). Actively pursuing these objectives will help those in Congress to develop and deploy a strategic missle defense. Pry describes our lack of awareness of the increased hazards of nuclear war since the "end" of the Cold War as "the greatest intelligence failure of the missle age" (p. xvi), and reveals that "Moscow has raised the specter of nuclear war nearly a half dozen times since 1991" (p. xii). We should not wait until we see the blinding flash and feel the ground tremble to heed Pry's warnings that he has developed from unclassified and declassified sources.

Awesome!!

I was not expecting too much from this collection to be honest. Boy was I pleaseantly suprised! The storyline is great & well paced in my opinion. A few people have complained that it unfolded too slowly but I disagree. The time taken to tell the story enhances character development. And the art is perfect for this story. Janin has a classic style. Not too flashy, but it comes across beautifully in these pages. Overall, I would say a strong 4.5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this collection to anyone who has ever enjoyed any of these characters. I especially like the idea of Deadman & Constantine in this group. Great story, great art, great read!!! You need to check this one out!

"Most of them are a danger to themselves. But that doesn't mean they're not a danger to others..."
By H. Bala
Based on its supernaturally-fueled concept and offbeat characters, JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK was my early dark horse going into DC's New 52. I'm still not sold on DC's whole reshuffling gimmick, but I can't deny that there are some outstanding new titles out there. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Vol. 1: IN THE DARK collects the series' first six issues. Peter Milligan writes these six issues and then two more before amscraying. Artist Mikel Janin exhibits greater lasting power. This new series threatens to be the most interesting Justice League iteration since the bwah-ha-ha League. It's certainly the edgiest.

Blame long-lived clairvoyant Madame Xanadu, and then, I guess, pat her on the head (but do that at your own risk). Madame Xanadu's meddling has deprived the Enchantress of her human half, June Moone, and without June's stabilizing presence, the Enchantress has gone bat-guano crazy. Not even the Justice League can stand up to her homicidal rage. I knew I was in good hands when I got to that incredible splash panel in which Superman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg can do nothing but cower under the assault of a swarm of witches' teeth. It dawns on Madame Xanadu that something different is called for, something less cape and tights. She sets out to gather a different kind of team. She may as well have recruited from a trashy daytime talk show. She ends up with the most messed-up sort of meta-people. On the other hand, the Doom Patrol's tagline of "The World's Strangest Heroes" just lost some credibility.

"Most of them are a danger to themselves. But that doesn't mean they're not a danger to others," remarks Madame Xanadu, and that's not exactly the strongest vote of confidence. The tarot-reading psychic ransacks the old Vertigo stable, enlisting to her unofficial team the groady John Constantine, the headstrong, backwards-enchanting Zatanna, the oxygen-challenged ex-acrobat Deadman, the unstable Shade the Changing Man burdened with a sentient, reality-altering Meta Vest, and one other nvtcase. Honestly, I haven't seen thrown-together personalites this disparate and dangerous since Ostrander's Suicide Squad. It makes for fascinating group dynamics, given the distaste everyone has for everyone else. But that's later on. For the first few issues, Peter Milligan teases the reader by featuring his cast mostly in their own individual arcs.

4 out of 5 stars for this one. I will say that issue #6 is a bit of a letdown in that the ongoing motivation for these hostile loners to stick together comes off as forced and contrived. Disappointingly, issue #6 also serves as a mere transitional device that points the reader towards Justice League Dark's crossover arc with its companion horror title, I, VAMPIRE (which sadly just got canceled, by the way).

Hopefully, you know better than to anticipate traditional superheroics in this title. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, steeped in occult sensibility, reads more like SWAMP THING or NIGHT FORCE (and where's the NIGHT FORCE collected trade they'd been promising, anyway?). Mikel Janin's brooding photo-realistic art is invaluable, whether in depicting gorgeous, enigmatic women or in establishing a dark, ominous tone. The art really pops. Janin is brilliant at drawing grotesque creatures. He visualizes Xanadu's peeks into a bleak future with such foreboding clarity that you see why she's so frantic to recruit this bunch of oddballs. When everyone is finally in the same room, I love the abrasive, no-holds-barred character interplay. The promise of such combustibility and the crisp artwork are the two things that drew me in. The ensuing eldritch mayhem is just a bonus. I'm forever down with any narrative in which the characters battle inner AND outer demons.

Great Potential
By Scott William Foley
Justice League Dark has a fantastic premise. I have to admit, when I heard about this book, I became giddy. I've always loved DC's magical characters, especially those with a bit of an edge. And while I love their depictions at Vertigo, a part of me rejoiced that they were rejoining DC proper. Furthermore, by putting "Justice League" in the title, these characters would enjoy a certain level of celebrity, allowing new readers to discover their charisma. Interestingly enough, the team is comprised of three characters I hold very dear (Deadman, Zatanna, and Constantine) and three characters for whom I'm not all that invested (Shade, Enchantress, Madame Xanadu). Finally, there's a character I've never heard of (Mindwarp) which frankly surprised me because I've been reading DC off and on for the last several decades.

So as you can gather, I was fairly biased before I even opened the first volume of Justice League Dark. I wanted to like it. And, honestly, I did like it.

But it's not perfect.

The premise is a bit clichéd. The world is at risk, and only by these seven joining forces can this destruction be averted. Of course, the Enchantress is already destroying much of the earth, and so the future cataclysm seems a little unimportant. And as entire cities are dying, only the seven members of Justice League Dark seem to be doing anything. This is where the book lost me. After brief appearances by Superman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg, the rest of the world's heroes are nowhere to be found. I thought Milligan overreached with the wholesale destruction of cities. Toddlers are killing caregivers, brunettes are killing blondes, nuclear power plants have decided to quit - it all became a bit much to the point of almost being silly. I think if Milligan had kept it tighter and more focused, perhaps concentrating upon only one locale, it would have been an easier plot to accept. And while I won't spoil anything, the end of the book fell into the horrible trap of offering one last jolt, one last horrific challenge that seems to pop up out of nowhere and disappear nearly as quickly. It reminded me of some really bad horror movies in that regard, and I didn't want the book to end on such a sour note.

However, the characters alone are enough to keep me around, and they do make an interesting mix. Would I have liked their "origin" story to have been a little more original and unique? Yes, but it was a serviceable first volume, and while I didn't love it, I also didn't hate it.

The real star of the book is artist Mikel Janin. Janin's pencils and inks are absolutely beautiful. He makes these characters look both regal and terrifying, and he blends the super hero genre with horror expertly. He's one of the few artists out there who actually knows how to draw realistic regular clothing, but he also excels at the traditional "costume." I see that Janin is still on Justice League Dark as of this writing, which is definitely a reason for me to keep keeping it. In the hands of a different artist, Justice League Dark may not have been as enjoyable an experience.

If you're into the darker side of the DC Universe and still enjoy a spot of super heroics, Justice League Dark may be the book for you. Thought the story wasn't initially superb, I see a lot of potential with these characters in particular and look forward to seeing what's in store for them, especially as rendered by Mikel Janin.

Democracy Without Consensus: Communalism and Political Stability in Malaysia (Princeton Legacy Library), by Karl Von Vorys

Since World War II the democratic systems adopted by states emerging from colonial rule have in some cases been abandoned and in others suspended or transformed. Two questions arise: Can democracy succeed in newly independent states dominated by communal cleavages? If so, what adjustments are necessary in Western models of democracy? Karl von Vorys contributes new answers by examining the political development of Malaysia, a country which has experimented with changes in the democratic model.

He surveys the conditions under which democracy was established in Malaysia, considering the compromises made with communal groups. Particular attention is paid to the reconstruction of the political system after the race riots of May 1969, which the author observed at first hand.

The Origins of the Cold War 1941-1949, Seminar Studies in History (2nd Edition), by Martin McCauley

This study explores the fundamental questions facing students: who was responsible for the Cold War? Was it inevitable or could the whole episode have been avoided? Was Stalin genuinely interested in a postwar agreement? Was a great opportunity lost by the world powers, one which could have brought immense benefits to both sides as well as to the rest of the world...? Since publication of the First Edition in 1983 the world has changed out of all recognition -- the Cold War has ended, communism has collapsed and 1991 saw the final demise of the Soviet Union. It is in the light of these recent events, and the latest historiography, that Martin McCauley has revised, and greatly expanded, his original text.

Informative but dull
By Sparky Cola
This book is very thorough--it covers every perspective and is fairly objective. However, it is very difficult to sit and read through. My attention was very easily diverted and after I finished, I couldn't remember it well enough to write my essays.

Dull
By Max Power
I bought this book recently along with some other McCauley titles, and this is the Cherry on the Sundae. It was much shorter than I expected, but repeats the paranoid anti-Soviet, Russophobic mantra of the other McCauley volumes.
This was the most boring of them, though. I admit to only having had the endurance of reading half the book.
