Essential reading for the Hobby Metal Caster

Foundry Engineering takes the art of metal casting and turns it into science.
This book lays out a system to calculate mold and gating properties, so as the metal is poured, it settles in the mold at just the right temperature to solidify with the exact metallurgical properties required. I could probably write my own casting program from the equations in this book.

The book has good coverage of metallurgical properties and how to attain them through proper mold and gating design.
The old "Navy Foundry Manual" covers this process but in the end still relies on art, skill and tradition. Robert Tuttle offers Engineering equations to design a predictable process.

I am a retired military aviator with a machine and welding shop. I am building an electric arc furnace for casting steel with commercial intentions and have a dedicated building for this project. The prototype furnace is only at 6KW. I have accumulated a small library on Metallurgy and Sand Casting. This book is essential to rise above the hobby casting level and to create a predictable and consistent product.

Chapters 7, 8 and 9 on Aluminum, Cast Iron and Steel Alloys was well presented and of practical use. The information on Iron and Steel grain structure were better presented and a great addition to "Principles of Metalographic Laboratory Practice" by Kehl.

This book is concise and easy to read at 320 pages. The equations are not difficult. It is set up well for future reference for when I am ready to design the process for creating a casting.

I am anxiously waiting on Volume 2. Hope it contains a chapter on high temperature (3,000 degrees) refractory chemistry and formulations.

About the Author
Natsume Soseki (1867-1916) is one of the best-known Japanese authors of the 20th century and considered as the master of psychological fiction. As well as his works of fiction, his essays, haiku, and kanshi have been influential and are popular even today.

Meredith McKinney holds a PhD in medieval Japanese literature from the University in Canberra, where she teaches in the Japan Centre. Her other translations include Ravine and Other Stories, The Tale of Saigyo, and for Penguin Classics, The Pillow Book and Kokoro.

A Midspring Night's Dream

"Kusamakura" is surely one of the weirdest novels of the twentieth century. A very early work by Natsume Soseki, who would go on to be one of Japan's foremost novelists, it's a pioneering one-shot experiment with what the author himself called a "Haiku novel" years before Kawabata Yasunari got the credit for such with his Palm-of-the-Hand Stories. A novel without a plot, where nothing of note really happens, and yet it's an endlessly engaging tale. Or is it a philosophical treatise on aesthetics narrated in the form of a story? Breathtakingly ethereal one moment, it's hilariously crass the next. In genre, it's a heady fusion of the Western novel and the Eastern poem equally at home with Percy Shelley and Yosa Buson, John Millais and Katsushika Hokusai, Oscar Wilde and the Tales of Ise, Christ and Bodhidharma. Staunchly nostalgic and even a tad traditionalist in an age when such things were being pell-mell thrown along the wayside, and yet modernist about a decade or so before its time--arguably ever bit as experimental as Joyce's "Ulysses" in many ways and yet a hundred times more readable and, yes, enjoyable. Indeed, everything I've said up to now may make "Kusamakura" seem rather portentous, but as a work of literature it's utterly unpretentious and approachable. It also so happens, as you may have guessed, to be one of my all time personal favorites.

Which is why nobody could be more thrilled to see "Kusamakura" newly translated and published by Penguin--the folks who have been making classics approachable for decades. Meredith McKinney's new translation here is nothing less than excellent. Unpretentious as it is, "Kusamakura" is nowadays something of a hard nut to crack linguistically speaking, filled as it is with deliberate archaisms of an ornate nature on the one hand and cockney-esque colloquialisms on the other (among other slight puzzlers now obscure in contemporary printed Japanese) and yet McKinney handles Soseki's many voices and sometimes elliptical narration with a surefire grasp of the language and manages to convey the same in highly fluent and idiomatic English. It's carefully accurate and true to the original and yet makes itself at home in its new language to a degree that seems natural and easy but must in fact have entailed much hard work and scholarly care. This edition is also judiciously supplemented with unobtrusive but helpful endnotes following up on Soseki's principal references, and the introduction does a fine job of adequately situating this idiosyncratic classic in the context of Soseki's larger opus and of contextualizing both within the larger framework of Japanese literature and history at the turn of the (last) century without unduly overburdening the book.

In short, this is a wonderful edition of a wonderful book--totally flawless. Okay, not totally; when you first open the book and glance at the half-title page, you'll see in the little blurb the dates for the Meiji period incorrectly given as 1868-1914 instead of 1868-1912. That little nitpick aside, though, this fine book is going to be the definitive edition of Natsume Soseki's early masterpiece for decades to come. Even if you've already read this novel in its previous English version (available in a number of printings, including The Three-Cornered World (Peter Owen Modern Classic) and Three Corner World (Unesco Collection of Representative Works. Japanese Series.)), I highly recommend this new and vastly improved one. And if you've never come across "Kusamakura" before at all, well then, the open road to the deep south awaits you, grass pillow and all!

Kusamakura

As he turns thirty a man goes to a village in the mountains and thinks about art, tries to find his own identity among the western and the traditional (japanese and chinese) ways of creating art and looking at the world, describes the nature that surrounds him and the few people that live there.

Kusamakura is very poetical. I wish I could read japanese, but even in transation the words flow beautifully and you can sense the changes in tone, and you find yourself in a magical world. I particulary remember a scene where he is observing the girl, how he describes her and thinks about if beauty is better described as still or in movement. He tries to paint her but something is missing. And then there is the last scene...

Of course not everyone will like it (but this is true of every book) so I tried to tell you why I do (I am sorry if I can not be more elocuent but my english is not very good). If you like books with a lot of action, or if the subjects I mentioned above do not interest you, this book is not for you. But it is not true that you have to know a lot to enjoy this book, I myself do not know much and I loved it.

About the Author
Donald J. Boudreaux served as chairman of the department of economics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, from 2001 to 2009. He runs a blog, CafeHayek.com, with Russ Roberts and has lectured in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe. He is the author of Globalization (2008), and his writing has been published in the Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, Regulation, Reason, Ideas on Liberty, the Washington Times, the Journal of Commerce, the Cato Journal, and several scholarly journals.

Before chairing the economics department at George Mason, Boudreaux was president of the Foundation for Economic Education; associate professor of legal studies and Economics at Clemson University, and assistant professor of economics at George Mason University.

Engaging and Provoking

To relieve his frustration at misguided popular reporting on economic issues that affect each of us, often in ways we don't appreciate at first glance, Don Boudreaux, a Professor of Economics, writes one letter-to-the-editor every day. I suspect he voted for Ron Paul, but he spares no one, whether "The New York Times", Fox News, "The Wall Street Journal", or Nobel-winner Paul Krugman. Each has received at least one (usually more) short pithy letter explaining why a pronouncement on a current government program or a commonly accepted nostrum is bunkum.

So when Randi Weingarten says markets won't solve the schooling crisis, Boudreaux asks her to imagine groceries being supplied the way education is. Folks would pay property taxes, and the Government would spend the taxes on building and supplying grocery stores. Of course you would be "assigned" to your neighborhood "public" grocery store where you would receive your weekly allotment of groceries for "free". Grocery administrators would decide the quality and quantity of groceries you would receive. Wealthier counties would have better stores, and Boudreaux suspects that the quality of the local public supermarket would play a major role in your choice of where to live if you could afford to move.

When a Mr. Warner writing to the "Los Angeles Times", hoping to defeat members of Congress who voted against Obamacare, asked readers to remember these opponents "Every time you have to pay an extravagant co-pay ... or deductible", Boudreaux chides Mr. Warner for wanting Boudreaux to be angry "whenever I have to pay for resources I use - to be peeved that someone else isn't footing my bill - to be upset that Uncle Sam hasn't arranged for me to free-ride on other peoples' nickels - to strike back at politicians who refuse to force Mr. Warner to pay my health-care expenses and me to pay his." Boudreaux rejects, as he puts it, "Mr. Warner's childish advice and his predatory principles."

Even if you are not a libertarian or a supporter of the free market, this is a book to give to your high school or college-age child to ask: "Ok, you know we don't agree with this, but what's the most logical way to refute it?" It's perfect to spark a dinner table conversation (assuming they still exist). And I suspect that everyone will agree with Boudreaux on something because libertarians tend to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal. For example, you can tell Boudreaux applauds Obama's recent order reducing the deportation of illegal immigrants because our economy shouldn't deprive itself of valuable resources. As Boudreaux says: "All great societies are open societies. They fear neither competition nor different cultures."

And as Hurricane Debby is approaching Galveston, Texas, this week, it's amusing to read the letter from September 2008 to a radio station about its reporter's interview with the angry resident who went to the gas station "to top off" before Hurricane Ike hit. She was furious that prices had gone up $0.50 a gallon from the day before. "It's ridiculous, Ike hasn't hit yet!" Boudreaux said the reporter should have asked: "Why are you topping off? Ike hasn't hit yet." The operator of the gasoline station acted in anticipation of the imminent landfall of Ike the same way the motorist did, by recognizing that a resource, normally readily available, might be more scarce for a time.

"Hypocrites & Half-Wits" is engaging and provoking, always a good combination. It's a useful antidote to the popular sources of news which often provide information that isn't quite accurate, in fact the opposite. Boudreaux's gentle skepticism is a tonic most will enjoy and can think about after they closed the cover.

A great education on economics and liberty for everyone -- from economists to ignoramuses -- in a simple and fun format!

Before I begin my review, I must state in the interest of full disclosure: I am one of the (many) people that are thanked in the Acknowledgements of this book -- because I am a friend of the author Donald J. Boudreaux, and over the past few years, I have often chatted with Boudreaux about the content of his letters to the editor; some of which were ultimately compiled for this book -- although I had nothing whatsoever to do with the publishing of the book. I am recommending this wonderful book on its own merit; I truly believe that it is a gem. I greatly enjoyed reading it, and so will you!

Donald J. Boudreaux is a professor at George Mason University: an economist and a lawyer, he was Chairman of the Economics Department at GMU for 8 years, and currently teaches in GMU's economics department and law school. He is a staunch advocate of individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and non-interventionist foreign policy. He frequently writes letters-to-the-editor in support of these principles, in opposition to newspaper articles/editorials that counter these principles, or display what he believes to be economic illiteracy. But newspaper editors are not the only targets of Boudreaux's pearls of wisdom: he will write a letter to anyone whom he encounters displaying economic illiteracy or advocating Big Government, whether it is a radio talk show host regurgitating talking points that have no basis in sound economics; a politician arguing for ever-more governmental power; or a blogger arguing that America is somehow economically harmed by importing cheap goods made in foreign countries.

He almost certainly has the world record for letters written to the editor -- he has written nearly 5,000 letters over the past decade! Of course, some of the letters he writes ultimately get printed in the newspapers.

This book is a selection of 100 of the letters he has written. (NOTE: Boudreaux sends all his daily letters to his large listserve; information on how to join the listserve is available in the book. He posts about half of his letters at the popular blog called Cafe Hayek, which he runs with his GMU colleague Russ Roberts).

In addition to being a brilliant economist, Boudreaux has two particularly great skills: Firstly that of Brevity, and secondly, what I like to call Easy Elucidation for Everyone. He has an incredible ability to impart a lesson on economics so that it is easily understandable to anyone, in a very concise manner: most of his letters are 200 words or less. That ability to explain a point so that even a person who has never studied economics can understand it easily, all in a letter than can be read in under 2 minutes, is a priceless gift.

I can personally attest to this: I have never studied economics formally, yet I have read and understood every letter Boudreaux has written over the past 6 years with the same ease that I understand the box score of a baseball game. I have more than held my own throughout numerous debates/discussions on important economic concepts with college-educated friends, ALMOST ENTIRELY DUE TO THE EDUCATION I RECEIVED FROM READING BOUDREAUX'S DAILY LETTERS!

This book is a great read whether or not you agree with Boudreaux's political views: if you do, then this book will give you great ammunition in support of your beliefs when you are arguing against those with different political beliefs. And if you do not share Don's opinion on some or all issues, this book will do a great job in challenging your views and seeing another side you may not have considered previously. Either way, this book will make you think about important issues in ways you never thought of before.

In addition to economic/fiscal issues, Boudreaux's letters address many other subjects, including: individual liberty, governmental regulation of private behavior, nanny statism, the war on drugs, the immoral hunger for power that drives so many politicians, and foreign policy.

The letters may make you laugh at idiotic comments uttered by radio hosts and callers; angry at the economic ignorance spewing from certain print outlets; or puzzled at how certain politicians ever got elected (and re-elected and re-elected and re-elected!)

Whether you follow politics closely or casually; whether you agree with all, some, or none of Boudreaux's views; and whether you've ever previously read any of Don's letters or will be reading them for the first time, this book will be a very enjoyable read.

The book was compiled in a very attractive format: Each letter is printed on one page; and on the facing page, there is an item that somehow relates to the letter: it may be a cartoon, a quote, or a few lines of bio regarding a famous person mentioned in the letter, or an easy-to-understand graph demonstrating eg. the fallacy of population control as a positive economic policy.

Everything is written clearly, concisely, and fact-driven, and where necessary, supported with appropriate statistics: there is absolutely none of the nonsensical straw-man arguments or cliche's that are sadly what passes for much of political discussion today -- whether in newspapers, on blogs, talk radio, or cable television -- on both sides of the political aisle.

For years, I've been recommending Boudreaux's letters to my personal friends, and they've all told me how much they love reading them; well, now that this wonderful book has been released, I enthusiastically recommend it to all of you, my Amazon friends ;-)

I am sure you will all find "HYPOCRITES AND HALF-WITS" interesting, informative, and fun, all at the same time!

An elegant painless way to learn economics

For those who have enjoyed Don Boudreaux's letters to editors at various newspapers and other news organizations at this website CafeHayek.com, Free To Choose Press has collected those letters and other musings in one place. This 248 page book is an extremely fast read, but even those who don't have the attention span to tackle econ books will find this a very painless way to learn economics in simple, very well explained small bites. I was able to go through the book in just a leisurely few hours. As someone who has taught economics for 20 years and tried myself to explain economics to the general public, I can only hope that some professors will have this book as a supplemental reading for their principals classes.

Wonderfully informative

The information presented in this book is amazing in its scope and depth. Histories of anything usually leave me bored, but I was thoroughly impressed by the unusual yet thorough way Morris presented the information. It is not intended to be a how-to manual. If you just want to know how to make perfume, soap, candles, etc. and don't want to be knowledgeable about your product then this is not for you. Personally, I found it fascinating.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Besides relating the history of perfume, it highlights geopolitic information that creates a well-rounded biography of perfume. I highly recommend reading this book if you are interested in learning about the history of perfume.
