Great Story and Audio Book

I can't tell you how much I love Valerie Leonard's reading of "These Is My Words." Ms. Leonard brings the story to life in all Sarah Prine's many happy and sad travails. I highly recommend listening to the book, and I don't often recommend listening to a book. That is a testament to the brilliant voice given to Sarah through Valerie Leonard's voice and the engaging story written by Nancy Turner. It is just too bad this audio book is no longer available on Amazon.

Looking to the future of technology, not back

For years, Stephen O’Grady, and his partner in crime and business, James Governor, have been telling anyone who will listen that the IT business is, and has been, undergoing a massive shift in power from the top-down of old to a new – and sometimes terrifying – bottom-up perspective. These thoughts have been collected on Twitter, his blog, and at every conference he spoke at and attended, including the excellent Monktoberfest. For those who haven’t had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the hoppy goodness of their leadership, Stephen’s put a great compilation of those thoughts and themes together in a new book: The New Kingmakers.

First, it’s necessary to say that this isn’t some Alfred North Whitehead tome of inscrutable kōans. Instead, it is written in a breezy and approachable style that masks the powerful themes contained; themes that are terrifying if you sit atop the old order. As Mary Poppins says, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, and in this case the medicine is one that will empower entire new industries and bring others to their knees. The entire book revolves around the idea that developers – and not managers and executives – are the power brokers in the IT industry, and to a lesser extent that all things are IT. For those of us on the inside of this transformation, this seems a somewhat obvious observation in retrospect, but when Stephen first offered this idea in 2010 – akin to Tim O’Reilly’s early observation of the power of the alpha geeks in 2002 – this wasn’t as clear as it is now. The near-alchemic combination of open source, the Internet, and its bastard love-child cloud computing, have rewritten the rules for everyone, whether they know it or not.

Do yourself a favor, take an hour out of your life to read Stephen’s mini-book, and then spend many more hours thinking about what it all means to your world. Like all good writing, it should leave you with more questions than you had when you started. Use those questions to re-evaluate and re-shape your own future.

Interesting Viewpoint

I heard about this book while attending a technology conference and was intrigued enough that I bought it that same night.

The main focus of the book is how open source, cloud computing and the Internet in general have empowered developers. Open Source software provided developers with powerful software that once was only available to enterprises. The same is true with cloud, massive computing power is available and affordable to an individual. Finally the Internet allows for sharing information, education and opens up a wide market and opportunities.

The author does a great job of supporting his theories with details about specific organizations and technologies.

At around 75 pages it is a quick read that I found informative,enlightening and easy. I recommend anyone in IT take the time to read it.

A Definitive History of the 1820s

Well deserving his Pulitzer, Dangerfield opens this fascinating study with the negotiations at Ghent and closes with the advent of the Jackson presidency. His erudite treatment of the complex political realities of the period reaveal that the prevailing feelings were anything but good. All this aside, _The Era of Good Feelings_ is probably not a choice fire-side text for the casual reader.

Brilliant Book on Neglected Period

George Dangerfield's "The Era of Good Feelings" is a wonderful book covering the often forgotten politics and events between the Jeffersonian era and the Jacksonian period. Dangerfield's vivid writing style and his gift at presenting the biographical sketch guides the reader along. From the heated discussions of the Monroe Cabinet to the skirmishing between churches in the field and their congregational headquarters to Andrew Jackson leading the invasion of Spanish Florida, Dangerfield captures a time of great growth and transition. Dangerfield is also excellent in showing how English politics and economics shaped the fledgling republic during these years. Dangerfield's takes on the leading political actors form a wonderful portrait gallery: the elusive James Monroe, the puritanical John Quincy Adams, the merry Henry Clay and raging John Randolph, the logical John Calhoun and the emotional Andrew Jackson. Dangerfield offers an excellent bridge between more established periods of American history and shows the importance of this neglected period.

This book strongly articulates and projects some of the primary political and social events that shaped the early part of 19th Century US History.

The cast of characters who played seminal roles in the Era of Good Feelings along with antebellum America are told with fine detail and prolonged piqued interest by the author.

The Era of Good Feelings constitutes an excellent addition to any undergrad or graduate US History course or simply for the joy of knowledge.
