From his early comics work with Zap to his recent magazine Juxtapoz, Williams keeps pushing the public's buttons with his politically incorrect art agenda. The Lowbrow Art of Robert Williams is the fundamental collection of his work, including 16 pages of full-color illustrations and almost 30 pages from Zap. The cover is possibly the most recognizable Williams piece because it was used on a Guns N' Roses album Appetite for Destruction.

Not for timid reders, or anyone who minds being offended.

It seems to me that a rule that all sensors should go by is that the mere fact that a work offends someone is sufficient evidence that it has artistic value. By that test, Williams shines. No one, even the authors, could ever read this short book without being offended. But as Robert Crumb said about his own work "It's is in the culture. It had to be drawn." The most frequent offensive things are violence, death and objectifying women.
The text and photographs explain what cultures it comes from, how he learned to do it and who it was done for.
Though this is nominally a paper back, because the cover is soft, it on large (a bit under 8 1/2" x 11"), thick white paper and has a sewn binding like a hard cover. It has 18 pages, including the covers, of good reproductions of oil paintings and a lot of black and white cartoons and drawings. I like even the cartoons I already have in comix, because the printing is better.
Printing still does not fully reproduce oil painting, so I would like to see some of these in a museum some day.

Very Insightful into the world of Robert Williams

My wife got me this book for my birthday and I was riveted to it for days. Along with the 'eye-popping' artistry that Robert Williams is renown for, it was also great to read about Robert's history, influences and though process. I had known about Robert's work long before Guns 'N' Roses Appetite For Destruction album cover showcasing his work.

The Conqueror made simple

This book is a nice easy read for a little William 101. I picked this as my first book to learn the actual story of William the Conqueror. The text is easy yet very informative. This is a good starter book before moving into a more detailed biography. Jacob Abbott gives a short intro into William's Viking ancestors who were the first Dukes of Normandy. Then we get a chapter on William's father, Duke Robert who named his illegitimate son heir. From their William had to overcome his mark of birth and assert himself as a worthy heir to Normandy. William was always proving himself as he grew into a great warrior and leader. He fights off would be relatives who seek to take his throne and even challenges the King of France. Mr. Abbott explains how he came to be named heir to the English throne by his cousin Edward, Saxon King of England. Then we have the build up and ultimate crossing of the English Channel and the battle of Hastings in 1066. Finally we move to the beginning of his reign of England and the "Normanization" of Britain begins. Ultimately his death is caused by his oldest son being in constant rebellion and William is wounded on campaign. Although his end was not glorious, his legacy lives on in Britain today. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about William, Normandy and the Battle of Hastings.
