Interesting but incorrect information throughout

While it is an interesting book with great case examples, I would not recommend it for use in a class (or for any reference) as there are several inconsistencies with the DSM-IV-TR. It claims to have been updated just this year (2013), but it is apparent that was just a pathetic attempt at the editor/author trying to get a new book out to increase profits, as the content has quite obviously not been updated and the editing is very poor given all of the inaccurate statements. It is not consistent with new, politically correct terminology (for example, the book still uses terminology such as "Schizophrenics"); it incorrectly identifies disorders that are NOT present in the DSM-IV-TR but were in the DSM-IV; and it mislabels criteria from the current DSM (Inconsistencies in the length of time criteria must be present, for example, have been found). The textbook had been recommended for use, but as an instructor I have cringed several times in reading the chapters and will never use the book again and highly recommend against its use in any class higher than a high school psychology course (and even then I would be hesitant given all of the errors in it).

This text is full of case studies from the past and present. Some cases are of well know people in modern day history. It is a very easy and fundamental resource for understanding and putting together concepts and behaviour.

Online there are several websites that provide tablature for popular songs. You can easily find tabs for songs by Miley Cyrus, the Jo Bros and Taylor Swift. One website has over two dozen different tabs for Stairway to Heaven. But it's hard to find tabs for not so popular songs including the old blues classics.

This is a fun product to play with. If you're bored or stuck in a rut and maybe not seeing a lot of progress in your playing, the play-along series might help you get out of the slump. The book consists of complete tablature for both rhythm and lead guitar. The CD contains software and two tracks for each song. One track is the complete song; the other track contains only the back up instruments, not the guitar, like a backing track. The software is slow down software whereby you can play the tracks at slower (or faster) pace. It helps when learning the songs.

Volume 38 contains the original studio versions of the old blues classics. With "Crosscut Saw" you're going to get Albert King's original studio version, not the awesome blow your mind live version. Same thing with Texas Flood (SRF) and Frosty (Albert Collins). You have the original studio version even though everyone knows that studio blues recordings aren't anywhere nearly as pleasing as live blues. The blues for some reason only sounds its best live. Like a bird in a cage that never sings so sweet as when it is free.

With respect to learning, there are various styles in this book. You have old world very simple style of Howlin' Wolf. You have Albert Collins' unique style of playing which is hard if you use a pick like I do. There is Albert King with his mind blowing bends. An SRV song that uses constant up and down hand motion almost like a bluesy funk style. A beginner or intermediate player can really improve his or her techniques with this.

But it's blues, and with the blues you listen to what someone else is doing, maybe copy it, but then it's not blues unless you improvise and put your own style on it. With this you can listen to the original studio versions, master them and then do your own thing; add some of your own licks or tweak the rhythm; make it faster or slower. You can do anything you want with it.

As a long time user of Hal Leonard books for backing material, this book is up to the usual standard. The tabs are easy to follow and the ability to slow down the CD is great for learning the tough parts.

Great Band, Great Fun!

I've got to to admit I spent more time just jamming with the backing tracks than I did on learning the solos. Mostly because I learned many of these solos when I was younger, cutting my teeth.

For those that want to learn the solos, they are presented in TAB and notated. I can't vouch for the accuracy of these as I didn't check them. (I hate TAB and don't allow my students within a mile of it).

The backing tracks are great. You can really wail to these. Lots of easy fun! What a great way to learn to play!

Fabulous Book for Young Girl

When I was 10 years old, I was give "The Wonderful Fashion Doll" by Laura Bannon, for my birthday by my grandparents. I fell in love with everything about this book. I read it many times and also read it to my girls. The book is well aged and fragile, so I don't loan it out. My friend was here and leafed through it. She said she would love to read it to her grandchildren, but I can't bear to let it out of my sight. We checked the library, but they don't have it either. When I went online, I found that someone had a copy for $100 and was amazed at it's value. I wish they would reprint it, because it is truly a magical book. Every little girl should have the chance to read "The Wonderful Fashion Doll."

The Wonderful Fashion Doll Mystery

I loved this book as a child, and used some of the illustrations to design costumes! I have been looking for this book for several decades, but to no avail. It would be wonderful if it could be reprinted; over $100 is too much for my budget, and it would fascinate young women now.

Delightful and charming

I found a copy of this for a ridiculously high price (though still well under the $300-500 that seems to be the going rate) and succumbed to temptation. I had not read it, but it sounded from the descriptions like a book I would enjoy, and I was not disappointed. It is delightful; told in the first person by a little girl named Debby. There is a bit of information about early 19th century life, and about dolls; I loved reading about the fashion doll in the museum, whose name was Pretty Please.

"From the moment that Debby heard about GAY EVENT, the wonderful fashion doll, she knew that she just had to find her. Over a hundred years ago, GAY EVENT had been hidden away for safekeeping by Debby's great-great-great-grandmother somewhere on the Moore farm in Peterborough.

"Debby had never seen a fashion doll but from all reports, GAY EVENT must have been the most exquisite of all these dolls which were sent to different countries to display the latest fashions in the days before fashion magazines. Some of them had several wardrobes: evening dresses with tiny lace fans, street costumes with flower-trimmed bonnets, or riding habits, with all the accessories.

"It's no wonder that Debby searched for GAY EVENT everywhere on the farm. Almost every secret rom or concealed passage held some strange and interesting discovery. Debby learned about how people lived a hundred years ago and when she least expected it, she made the most exciting find of all."

Außerdem leitet er ein interdisziplinäres Forschungsprogramm, in dessen Rahmen die zukünftigen Paradigmen und Technologien des Cognitive Computings durch die Orchestrierung „klassischer“ und neuer Lösungsansätze konzeptionalisiert und durch Hard- und Softwarelösungen realisiert werden. Zuvor zeichnete er sich in den letzten 25 Jahren für die Entwicklung zahlreicher intelligenter Präventions-, Interventions- bzw. Brassaï (Gyula Halász) was born in 1899 in the Transylvanian village of Brasso. A painter, he arrived in Paris in 1923 and was introduced to photography by André Kertész in 1929. He is legendary for his discreet yet intimate photos of the nocturnal world of Paris.

Views of Paris nightlife in the early 1930's

Divided into 19 sections, each including a short essay on one subject (ex.: The Street Fair) with accompanying illustrations. Photographs include full-page printed to the edge of the paper (unfortunately also to the spine of the book), full-page with border, half and quarter page. Copyrights on most of the the photographs, listed in an appendix, range from 1931-33, a few are 1934.
Most of the 150 photographs are very good duotone reproductions, a few are less than great. My copy is a softcover, publ. by Thames & Hudson, 2001, labeled Printed in Italy on the back cover.
The subjects range from public toilets and their various uses, through petty underworld figures, gay nightclubs, prostitutes and brothels, bums, to backstage at the Folie-Bergere and an upper-class opium den. One interesting section deals with the annual "Balls" (read orgies) organized by the Schools of Medicine and the Arts on the Left Bank for their students. All get a sympathetic and nonjudgemental treatment. Overall an fascinating, but fragmented glimpse of Paris night life in the early 30's.

An amazing snapshot of a time long forgotten...

The photographs and stories in this book are truly remarkable. The underground world Brassai allows the reader to navigate is one that will leave a mark on your heart and tear at your soul. From lonely streetwalkers to the many faces of Parisian nightclubs, this amazing photographic journey gives a modern audience a true glimpse of what life was like in the 30s.

If you don't have it - get it.

Don't let the title put you off, there is very little in this book that would shock a modern audience. Times certainly ain't what they used to be. Brassai's photos and writings of a time now long gone however will slowly infuse in you a strange and somewhat uncomfortable nostalgia for a time long before you were born and places you wouldn't visit had you been born. Removed so far in time, it's all very safe - perhaps.
