A medical dictionary and Phrasebook

This book is a book designed to help caretakers/nurses and doctors who may go to East Africa to work for a period of time.

The arrangement of vocabularies in this book is arranged in categories such as, "medical equipment", "drugs and medication", "cells and parasites", "parts of the body", "diseases and common illnesses", "body fluids", "accidents, injuries and wounds", "forms of physical disabilities", "cardiovascular system", "gastro intestinal system", genito-urinary system and sexual health", "neurological system", "paediatrics", "psychiatry/mental health", "respiratory system", "surgical terms" and "nursing term". I haven't mentioned all categories of the book, but it covers most areas of health care and general human atonomy.

Included are chapters on basic "grammar", "greetings", "some essential everyday words and useful sentences", "numbers", "occupations", "family relations", "money", "time" and "food, weight and health".

I would recommend this book to beginners of Swahili. Each chapter includes general questions and responses for different situations in a health care setting. It is very useful in situations where you will have to interact with patients and your knowledge and fluency of swahili are limited.

I give this book four stars because it is the first book I have come across of its kind and because it is very useful for beginners.

It is a great quick reference guide and very useful during triage

I have used this book on five medical trips to Tanzania. It is a great quick reference guide and very useful during triage. I made tabs for the different chapters to make them easy to find. We use this book in conjunction with books which are more comprehensive medically including, "Where There is No Doctor," "Where There is No Female Doctor," and "Handbook of Medicine in Developing Countries." The size makes it easy to carry along in a backpack. My only complaint is that it is not available on Kindle.

Great concept. I think it's the only one out ...

Hey! Great concept. I think it's the only one out there of its kind (as of 2013).
Nonetheless, after arriving in Tanzania, I learned that some of the translations are not 100% exact (although they are in the right ballpark, most of the time). Also, while all words included in the book certainly do exist in Swahili, certain ones are only used in certain countries. For example, the book might provide a word for 'doctor' that is used in Uganda and Kenya, but not in Tanzania. (the word 'doctor' was just an example...I don't remember which words this was actually true for- I simply arrived in the country and learned from the people there). In spite of these weaknesses, overall, I would recommend this book!

About the Author
Johan van Parys, PhD, is the director of liturgy and sacred arts at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis. He also teaches liturgy in the School of Theology of St. John's University and is the co-founder and president of the Minnesota/North Dakota Chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums. Dr. van Parys received his doctorate in theology in liturgical studies from the University of Notre Dame and has graduate degrees from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, in archeology, art history, architecture, and religious studies. Johan van Parys, PhD, es director de Liturgia y Arte Sacro en la Basílica de Santa María, en Minneapolis. Refresher course for Catholics - and answers for others

We walk into church and the first thing we do is reach our fingers into holy water.

Why?

Even better questions are, what benefit are we supposed to be getting, and, what are we supposed to be thinking about when we do it?
Johan van Parys, a Minneapolis liturgist, has the answers to those questions and more.

Folks who haven't had any exposure to things Catholic will find explanations for everything from church architecture to garb, from gestures to sacraments. But if it's been some good while since Sister Mary Whats-her-name taught us that blessing ourselves with holy water upon entering church is a reminder of our baptismal vows, that we are members of Christ's church, that we're entering a holy place, a different atmosphere than the rest of the world, then you'll get something out of reading this, too.
After that, the author is off and running, effectively quoting from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the General Instructions of the Roman Missal, the documents of Vatican II and other authoritative works.

There's much to grab onto here, the what and why of vestments worn at Mass, the meaning behind the use of the various oils during sacramental rites, how sacred art can connect us to God and the saints, and of course, the superb symbolism of bread and wine.

Bread, he simply writes, that becomes the Body of Christ, is for Catholics "weekly nourishment on our journey of faith." And he's honest enough to note this about the use of wine at Mass:

"Wine has been ascribed medicinal qualities: It was used to settle an upset stomach and to clean out wounds. Still, the principal quality of wine is to add festivity to a gathering and emphasize unity among those who share the cup."

He's unafraid to explain how some Catholic ritual evolved from pre-Christian peoples.

And there's a marvelous chapter on sacred architecture as symbol that tackles why our churches look the way they do and how they've changed through 2,000 years. The book is richer for the personal anecdotes van Parys relates: I loved the one about the choir members who tossed their coats casually on the altar only to have the pastor come by and sweep the coats off in one fell swoop!

After reading "Symbols That Surround Us" I could easily see it serving as the text for a small group for a number of sessions and as the focus of an adult faith formation series. Those who facilitate gatherings for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) might find it a nice supplementary resource.

But let me go back to my very first thought: I wasn't halfway through "Symbols That Surround Us" when the lightbulb was turned on: I'd forgotten so many of these symbolic connections that enrich Catholic life. Reading van Parys' little book will remind those of us in the over-50 crowd of some what we used to know -- or at least had studied for the religion class test!

I did not know.

I thought this was a great, easy to read book on symbols in the Catholic Church. As someone who did not grow up in the church I had and still have a million and one question and I feel that this book has given me a good basic understand of symbols that are a part of our everyday life as Catholics.

Faithful reflections

Johan van Parys, clearly a faithful and intelligent man, has given us a lovely book, both a reference to the basic symbolism of the Catholic Church and a guide to meditate and reflect on the deeper mysteries of the Catholic faith and liturgy. In a time of great turmoil in the church, when so many are estranged from the faith of their childhood, this book reminds us of some of the clearest and most basic memories--holy water, genuflecting, candles, incense--that were likely key to our early faith. It is a sweet and thoughtful book, both an honoring of the author's childhood faith in Belgian, and a wise discussion of key elements of church theology.

Good Book About Relationships

I really enjoyed this book. I feel like the author uses solid examples from her personal life, her clients life, and movies to illustrate issues that arise in relationships. She then provides viable solution to these problems, A few of my favorite subjects include the" importance of forgiveness" and "wearing masks." All and all, a great read.

Terrific, loved it, has stuff to do so I feel proactive

This is a terrific book! I really loved it. I read almost all of it in less than a week, took notes, did some of the exercises, and started on my lists. I really liked how the author walked me through doing the lists. I like having something practical to do to facilitate the progress I'm looking for. Since reading the book, for the past couple of weeks, I've been reading my list out loud to myself a couple times a day as instructed, and I find the ideas coming to mind as I'm at work or play. Hopefully this change in thought process will bring me to the "I Do" I'm looking for. I don't usually meditate daily, but I liked a few of the meditations enough to use them as well. I do feel the first one especially has helped me get on the journey as the book describes. Definitely consider using what tools and ideas resonate for you, as some of the topics might not apply to you. I can see this book used by adults of all ages, whether you've been married before as I have, or you're on your first relationships. I had the pleasure of attending the author's lecture before buying the book, and she seemed very genuine, not just a writer trying to sell her latest story. I never met her before, so this is my personal opinion of the book, rather than a request from a friend or colleague. Good luck in your journey!

There are a lot of real life scenarios that are easily relatable and it was a fun read

I have read A LOT of relationship books and as a professor in the field of family psychology I have been exposed to a plethora of scholarly articles on the topic. As a result when I started reading the book I didn't have high expectations that I would learn much more about relationships that I hadn't already seen. About half way through the book I realized that I was really enjoying the experience and seeing relationships from a different perspective. There are a lot of real life scenarios that are easily relatable and it was a fun read. I also liked the practical exercises at the end of each chapter. Overall the book was refreshing, down to earth and helpful! I definitely recommend!
